The Vampire Diaries is an American supernatural drama television series that premiered on The CW on September 10, 2009,[1] and concluded on March 10, 2017 after airing eight seasons.[2] Screenwriters Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec adapted the show from L. J. Smith's novel series of the same name. The series takes place in Mystic Falls, Virginia, a fictional small town haunted by supernatural beings. It centers on the love triangle between the protagonist Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and vampire-brothers Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). As the narrative develops in the course of the show, the focal point shifts on the mysterious past of the town involving Elena's malevolent doppelgänger Katherine Pierce (Dobrev) and the family of Original Vampires, all of whom have an evil agenda of their own. The Vampire Diaries was nominated for 115 awards, winning 37. This includes sixty-seven nominations at the Teen Choice Awards (with twenty-eight wins) and twenty-seven at the People's Choice Awards (with five wins). The three lead protagonists—Dobrev, Wesley and Somerhalder—have received the most nominations. Lead actress Dobrev was nominated for fourteen individual awards, winning five Teen Choice Awards, a People's Choice Award, and the Young Hollywood Award. Somerhalder earned widespread critical acclaim for his role of Damon Salvatore[3][4] and is the most decorated actor in the cast of the series, receiving sixteen nominations (including one co-nomination). Michael Trevino won the Choice TV Male Scene Stealer award for two consecutive years – 2011 and 2012 – for his role of Tyler Lockwood, a vampire-werewolf hybrid.[5] ALMA AwardsThe American Latino Media Arts Award, commonly known as the ALMA Award, is an annual accolade bestowed by the National Council of La Raza recognizing American Latino contributions to television, film and music.[6] Michael Trevino, of Mexican descent, received two nominations for his role of Tyler Lockwood, a vampire-werewolf hybrid.[7]
Do Something AwardsThe Do Something Awards is a joint awards ceremony held by the Do Something Services and the American cable television network VH1. The Vampire Diaries received two nominations in 2012, one in the Best TV Drama category and one for Somerhalder.
mtvU Fandom AwardsThe mtvU Fandom Awards is an award show that honors diehard fangirls and fanboys as well as their favorite shows and movies.
People's Choice AwardsThe People's Choice Awards is an awards show recognizing the people and the work of popular culture. The show has been held annually since 1975 on CBS and is produced by Procter & Gamble.[17] The Vampire Diaries won five awards from twenty-seven nominations.
Saturn AwardsAwarded since 1972, the Saturn Awards is an annual accolade presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films to honor science fiction and fantasy films and television shows.[25] The Vampire Diaries was nominated for eight Saturn Awards during its run.
Teen Choice AwardsThe Teen Choice Awards is an annual awards show that honors "the year's biggest achievements in music, movies, sports, television, fashion and more", being voted by young people aged between 13 and 19.[36] The Vampire Diaries won 28 awards out of total 67 nominations.
Young Hollywood AwardsThe Young Hollywood Awards is an annual accolade bestowed to honor the year's biggest achievements in pop music, movies, sports, television and fashion, as voted by teenagers and young adults.[54] The Vampire Diaries won two awards in 2010 and one award in 2014.
