{{See also|Municipalities of Armenia}}This is a list of cities and towns in Armenia ordered by population by the National Statistical Service of the Republic of Armenia [1]. Armenia has 46 municipalities designated as urban communities ({{lang-hy|քաղաքային համայնքներ}} kaghakayin hamaynkner) as of 2017. However, a city/town ({{lang-hy|քաղաք}} k'aghak' ) in Armenia is not defined based on the size of its population. The other 457 municipalities in Armenia are considered rural communities ({{lang-hy|գյուղական համայնքներ}} gyughakan hamaynkner). Yerevan, Gyumri, and Vanadzor are the three largest urban settlements of the republic, currently having populations of more than 80,000. They were considered as "major cities of republican subordination" ({{lang-hy|հանրապետական ենթակայության խոշոր քաղաքներ}}) during the Soviet period. The rest of the towns have a population of less than 50,000. Agarak, Dastakert and Shamlugh were downgraded from towns to villages as a result of the administrative reforms took place during 2017. As such they are no longer included in the list below. {{clear}}List Rank | City | In Armenian | Province | Founded | Population census (2011) | Population estimate (2016) | Change | Area (km2) | Coat of arms | Flag | Image | 1 | Yerevan | Երևան | {{N/A}} | 782 BC | 1,060,138|1,073,700}} | 223 | 2 | Gyumri | Գյումրի | Shirak | 8th century BC as Kumayri, 1837 as Alexandropol | 121,976|117,700}} | 54 | 3 | Vanadzor | Վանաձոր | Lori | 1828 | 86,199|82,200}} | 32 | 4 | Vagharshapat (Etchmiadzin) | Վաղարշապատ (Էջմիածին) | Armavir | 685 BC | 46,540|37,700}} | 13 | 5 | Abovyan | Աբովյան | Kotayk | 1963 | 43,495|35,400}} | 11 | 6 | Kapan | Կապան | Syunik | 5th century (first mentioned) | 43,190|34,600}} | 36 | 7 | Hrazdan | Հրազդան | Kotayk | 1959 | 41,875|32,200}} | 22 | 8 | Armavir | Արմավիր | Armavir | 1931 | 29,319|25,900}} | 8.51 | 9 | Artashat | Արտաշատ | Ararat | 1945 | 22,269|18,700}} | 12 | 10 | Ijevan | Իջևան | Tavush | 1780s | 21,081|17,700}} | 4.6 | 11 | Gavar | Գավառ | Gegharkunik | 1830 | 20,765|17,500}} | 16 | 12 | Goris | Գորիս | Syunik | 1870 | 20,591|16,300}} | 8 | 13 | Charentsavan | Չարենցավան | Kotayk | 1948 | 20,363|18,500}} | 5 | 14 | Ararat | Արարատ | Ararat | 1930 | 20,235|18,300}} | 6 | 15 | Masis | Մասիս | Ararat | 1953 | 20,215|18,500}} | 5.7 | 16 | Artik | Արթիկ | Shirak | 5th century | 19,534|18,800}} | 9 | 17 | Sevan | Սևան | Gegharkunik | 1842 | 19,229|17,200}} | 17.75 | 18 | Ashtarak | Աշտարակ | Aragatsotn | 9th century | 18,834|17,000}} | 7.5 | 19 | Dilijan | Դիլիջան | Tavush | 1544 | 17,712|16,600}} | 13 | 20 | Sisian | Սիսիան | Syunik | 8th century BC (first mentioned) | 14,894|12,900}} | 9 | 21 | Alaverdi | Ալավերդի | Lori | 1899 | 13,343|11,000}} | 18 | 22 | Stepanavan | Ստեփանավան | Lori | 1810 | 13,086|10,800}} | 14 | 23 | Martuni | Մարտունի | Gegharkunik | 1830 | 12,894|11,200}} | 10 | 24 | Spitak | Սպիտակ | Lori | 17th century | 12,881|11,000}} | 5.6 | 25 | Vardenis | Վարդենիս | Gegharkunik | 1830 | 12,685|11,600}} | 10 | 26 | Yeghvard | Եղվարդ | Kotayk | 6th century (first mentioned) | 11,672|10,900}} | 7 | 27 | Vedi | Վեդի | Ararat | 13th century (first mentioned) | 11,384|10,600}} | 5.6 | 28 | Byureghavan | Բյուրեղավան | Kotayk | 1945 | 9,513|8,300}} | 4 | 29 | Nor Hachn | Նոր Հաճն | Kotayk | 1953 | 9,307|8,400}} | 2.3 | 30 | Metsamor | Մեծամոր | Armavir | 1969 | 9,191|8,000}} | 9.12 | 31 | Berd | Բերդ | Tavush | 10th century | 7,957|6,700}} | 3.5 | 32 | Yeghegnadzor | Եղեգնաձոր | Vayots Dzor | 5th century (first mentioned) | 7,944|6,600}} | 6 | 33 | Tashir | Տաշիր | Lori | 1844 | 7,773|6,500}} | 5.6 | 34 | Kajaran | Քաջարան | Syunik | 1947 | 7,163|6,100}} | 2.8 | 35 | Aparan | Ապարան | Aragatsotn | 2nd century (first mentioned) | 6,451|5,300}} | 3.5 | 36 | Vayk | Վայք | Vayots Dzor | 1828 | 5,877|4,700}} | 3 | 37 | Chambarak | Ճամբարակ | Gegharkunik | 1830 | 5,850|4,700}} | 6 | 38 | Maralik | Մարալիկ | Shirak | 1828 | 5,398|5,500}} | 4 | 39 | Noyemberyan | Նոյեմբերյան | Tavush | 13th century | 5,310|3,900}} | 3.6 | 40 | Talin | Թալին | Aragatsotn | 2nd century (first mentioned) | 5,310|3,800}} | 7 | 41 | Jermuk | Ջերմուկ | Vayots Dzor | 13th century (first mentioned) | 4,628|3,400}} | 5 | 42 | Meghri | Մեղրի | Syunik | 906 | 4,580|3,500}} | 3 | 43 | Ayrum | Այրում | Tavush | 1937 | 2,126|1,400}} | 1.3 | 44 | Akhtala | Ախթալա | Lori | 10th century | 2,092|1,300}} | 4.3 | 45 | Tumanyan | Թումանյան | Lori | 1926 | 1,710|1,000}} | 1 | 46 | Tsaghkadzor | Ծաղկաձոր | Kotayk | 3rd century (first mentioned) | 1,256|900}} | 4 | |
