  • {{flagicon|Taiwan}} A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck near Taiwan on October 15 mid-day local time at a depth of {{convert|94.4|km|abbr=on}}. The epicenter was located {{convert|85|km|abbr=on}} East of Su-ao, and {{convert|130|km|abbr=on}} southeast of Taipei, Taiwan. The quake was felt in the Ryukyu Islands as well as in Taiwan.

  • {{flagicon|Indonesia}} A magnitude 9.2 earthquake struck Sumatra, Indonesia on December 26, causing a destructive tsunami which killed at least 227,898 people, making it the deadliest tsunami ever recorded. The waves reached as far as Africa.
