Political careerShakbut's father, Dhiyab bin Isa, had sent a hunting party from Liwa in 1761 which tracked a gazelle to a brackish spring on the island. Dhiyab ordered Shakbut to move to the island in 1793; he did, and built a village and fort there near a freshwater spring.[2] The fort, Qasr Al-Hosn, became the palace of the sheikhs.[2] It housed the Centre for Documentation and Research for several years, and is now being developed into a museum.[3] By Shakhbut's reign, Abu Dhabi had expanded to some 400 houses.[1] SuccessorsHe was followed by his sons Mohammed bin Shakhbut (ruled 1816–1818) Tahnun bin Shakhbut (ruled 1818–1833) Khalifa bin Shakhbut Al Nahyan (ruled 1833–1845), but co-ruled throughout all their reigns.[1] Hilal and Yafoor are identified as his sons in the 1845 Memoranda on the Tribes of the Arabian Shores of the Persian Gulf of Lieutenant AB Kembal, Assistant Resident at Bushire.[4] LegacyHe has been described as legendary, and having a notable amount of sons.[5] He was deposed by his son.[1] References1. ^1 2 3 {{Cite book|url=https://www.worldcat.org/oclc/47007671|title=History of the Indian Navy (1613-1863) Vol 1|last=1837-1918.|first=Low, Charles Rathbone,|date=1992|publisher=Archive Editions|year=|isbn=1852073365|location=[Farnham Common, Slough, England]|pages=16|oclc=47007671}} {{Rulers of Abu Dhabi}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Shakhbut Bin Dhiyab Al Nahyan}}{{UnitedArabEmirates-bio-stub}}{{MEast-royal-stub}}2. ^1 {{cite web | url=http://gulfnews.com/life-style/culture/uae-museum-qasr-al-hosn-in-abu-dhabi-1.100253 | title=UAE museum: Qasr Al Hosn in Abu Dhabi | publisher=Gulf News | date=2 November 2008 | accessdate=February 12, 2015 | deadurl=yes | archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20150212104127/http://gulfnews.com/life-style/culture/uae-museum-qasr-al-hosn-in-abu-dhabi-1.100253 | archivedate=12 February 2015 | df= }} 3. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.dubaifaqs.com/abu-dhabi-authority-for-culture-and-heritage.php | title=Dubaifaqs | publisher=Dubaifaqs | date=22 April 2014 | accessdate=February 12, 2015}} 4. ^{{Cite book|title=Arabian Gulf Intelligence|last=|first=|publisher=Oleander|year=1985|isbn=9781909349964|location=|pages=103}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=SHEIKH SHAKHBUT AND THE GREAT DECLINE|url=http://www.christopherdavidson.net/files/ADOAB_chapter2.pdf|accessdate=8 July 2016|language=English|format=PDF}} 4 : House of Al Nahyan|1793 births|1816 deaths|Sheikhs of Abu Dhabi |
