Sharma is a common surname in India and Nepal. The Sanskrit stem {{IAST|śarman-}} (nom. {{IAST|sarma}}) can mean 'joyfulness', 'comfort', 'happiness'. Although historically associated with people of the Brahmin varnas, the name has been widely adopted by other communities.[1]Sarma is an alternative English spelling of the name. Some Assamese people also use Sarmah.[2]
