Liverpool Landing, the settlement's port on the Yazoo River, was located {{convert|0.9|mi|km|abbr=on}} west of Liverpool.[2] Liverpool Road still runs through the former settlement, and Mississippi Highway 3 now runs between the former settlement and its river landing. HistoryDuring the early and mid-1800s, Liverpool Landing was "the hub of a bustling community, a steamboat stop and a shipping point for cotton".[3] During the American Civil War, Liverpool Landing's location at a bend in the Yazoo River made it an important defensive location for Confederate Army forces. Rugged, brush-covered hills rose abruptly on the eastern bank of the river, and one hill named "Rudloff Ridge" was selected for a defensive position.[4] In June 1862, Confederate forces constructed a log chain raft across the Yazoo River at Liverpool Landing, in order to obstruct the movement of large Union Army ships.[5] The New York Times described the raft as "a perfect lock against ascending boats".[4] The Confederate vessels Arkansas, General Clark, General Earl Van Dorn, Livingston, Mobile, and Polk were sent to defend the raft.[5] Another notable river battle occurred at Liverpool Landing from May 20 to 23, 1863, when Confederate commander William Wirt Adams engaged Federal Army gunboats there.[6] The Confederate vessels Ivy and Capitol were scuttled at Liverpool Landing in an effort to obstruct the river.[5][7] Liverpool and Liverpool Landing declined following the Civil War, when railroads largely replaced riverboat traffic.[3] The Liverpool Baptist Church and Cemetery is still located at the former settlement.[8][9] References1. ^{{gnis|686677|Liverpool (historical)}} {{Yazoo County, Mississippi}}2. ^{{gnis|707885|Liverpool Landing}} 3. ^1 {{cite web | last = Ewing | first = Jim | title = Mississippi Byways | publisher = Rootsweb | url = http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~msyazoo/Liverpool_Landing.htm | accessdate = March 2015}} 4. ^1 {{cite book | last = Smith, Jr. | first = Myron J. | title = The Fight for the Yazoo, August 1862-July 1864: Swamps, Forts and Fleets on Vicksburg's Northern Flank | publisher = McFarland | year = 2012 | url = https://books.google.ca/books?id=70GNAgAAQBAJ&lpg=PP1&pg=PP1#v=onepage&q&f=false | pages = 40}} 5. ^1 2 {{cite book | last = Owens | first = Harry P. | title = Steamboats & Cotton Economy | publisher = University Press of Mississippi | year = 1990 | url = https://books.google.ca/books?id=B7Kl9mLtXxIC&lpg=PP1&pg=PP1#v=onepage&q&f=false | pages = 45, 47, 62}} 6. ^{{cite book | last = Rowland | first = Dunbar | title = Mississippi: Comprising Sketches of Counties, Towns, Events, Institutions, and Persons, Arranged in Cyclopedic Form | publisher = Southern Historical Publishing Association | year = 1907 | url = https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE97852 | volume = 2 | page = 911}} 7. ^{{cite book | title = Annual Reports | publisher = United States War Department | year = 1873 | url = https://books.google.ca/books?id=KDQvzQN_P94C&pg=PP1#v=onepage&q&f=false | pages = 483}} 8. ^{{gnis|672731|Liverpool Church}} 9. ^{{cite web | title = Liverpool Church Cemetery | publisher = Find A Grave | url = http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&GSln=Logan&GSiman=1&GScnty=1593&CRid=2400100&pt=Liverpool%20Church%20Cemetery& | accessdate = March 2015}} 3 : Former populated places in Yazoo County, Mississippi|Former populated places in Mississippi|Ghost towns in Mississippi |
