In 1988, the site was added to the National Register of Historic Places.[1] According to its application, it is an "example of a 19th century commercial livery stable in the day".[2] HistoryThe Mediterranean Revival-style home was constructed in 1890 as a private home for Louis Bohne.[2] In 1893, the stable was added behind the house. In the latter part of the decade, brothers Herman and Henry Lohman leased the stable and operated a livery out of it. In 1918 they purchased the property and converted the lower floor of the house into a funeral home. The stables were closed in 1973. The house has since been converted to use by non-profit family service agency La Causa, Inc.[3] Milwaukee architects Herman Paul Schnetzky and Eugene R. Liebert designed the stable for carriages and horses, primarily ones used by the funeral home. It was the last remaining stable in Milwaukee to be designed by an architect.[4] The stable was the subject of a May 2011 story in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.[3] It described the history of the stable and documented that the building needed major repairs including beam replacement and a new roof. The city of Milwaukee had ordered that the building be razed.[4] The publicity caused several people to approach the owners about other purposes for the stable, including moving it to other locations.
