The film premiered in-competition in the World Cinema Documentary Competition at 2014 Sundance Film Festival on January 17, 2014.[3][4] The film was theatrically released by HBO on June 18, 2014.[5] SynopsisThe film narrates the story of a South Korean couple, who were immersed in an online game called Prius Online,[6] while their baby named Sarang died of malnutrition. ReceptionLove Child received mixed to positive reviews upon its premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Christie Ko in his review for ScreenCrave gave the film 6/10 and said that "This documentary is not an exhaustive look at the addiction to gaming, but does a good job of explaining this incident of the couple and their baby in South Korea. It is thorough in its treatment of their story. But it scratched the surface of broader implications that left me with many questions."[7] While, Daniel Fienberg of HitFix said in his review that Love Child never attempts to cheapen the tragedy of Sarang's death, but like "Web Junkie," it wants to lay out a pattern of behavior that might seem a little extreme, but also won't feel that outlandish to anybody who counts the Internet among the spaces in which they feel most social."[8]References1. ^{{cite web |title=Sundance 2014: HBO documentary 'Love Child' explores the dark side of online gaming -- POSTER EXCLUSIVE|url=http://insidemovies.ew.com/2014/01/16/sundance-hbo-documentary-love-child-poster/|accessdate=April 14, 2014}} 2. ^{{cite web |title='Love Child' Examines Death Linked to Game Addiction|url=https://blogs.wsj.com/scene/2014/01/10/love-child-examines-death-related-to-videogame-addiction/|accessdate=April 14, 2014}} 3. ^{{cite web |title=Sundance 2014: World Cinema Documentary Competition|url=http://www.indiewire.com/article/sundance-2014-world-cinema-documentary-competition|accessdate=January 18, 2014}} 4. ^{{cite web |title=Sundance '14: Doc trailer round-up|url=http://realscreen.com/2014/01/15/sundance-14-doc-trailer-round-up/|accessdate=April 14, 2014}} 5. ^{{cite web |title=Theatrical Release Dates|url=http://lovechildmovie.com/list/|accessdate=April 14, 2014}} 6. ^{{cite news|last1=Elder|first1=Sean|title=A KOREAN COUPLE LET A BABY DIE WHILE THEY PLAYED A VIDEO GAME|url=http://www.newsweek.com/2014/08/15/korean-couple-let-baby-die-while-they-played-video-game-261483.html|accessdate=2016-04-13|work=Newsweek|date=2014-07-27}} 7. ^{{cite web |title=Sundance 2014: Love Child - Movie Review|url=http://screencrave.com/2014-01-25/sundance-2014-love-child-movie-review/|accessdate=April 14, 2014}} 8. ^{{cite web |title=Review: 'Love Child' looks at online addiction in South Korea|url=http://www.hitfix.com/the-fien-print/review-love-child-looks-at-online-addiction-in-south-korea|accessdate=April 14, 2014}} External links
