Lucas Simões is a Brazilian artist based in São Paulo.

Simões was born in Catanduva in 1980 and moved to São Paulo in 2002 after attending Architecture school. He attended Politecnico di Milano in Italy in 2001. His work has been exhibited in Brazil, Germany, Spain, England, United States, Venezuela, Norway, France, Russia and Argentina.

Work

Lucas Simões' work is highly influenced by his architectural[1] and design background. Over the years Simões has experimented working with a wide range of materials: maps, books, photographs, concrete, silicon, wax and paper.

The artist processes the materials in different ways: burning, cutting, layering, reshaping, diluting or distorting them.

Career

Lucas Simões exhibited his work in 2016 at the Lora Reynolds Gallery in Austin,[2] at the Paço das Artes – USP in São Paulo entitled 'Jogo de Forças'.[3] The artist also had a Solo Project at SP Arte entitled ' tudo que pode ser feito e desfeito.'[4]

In 2015, Simões' work was exhibited at Space in Between in London;,[5] at the Hybrid Art 2015 in the Theatre of Russia in Moscow;[6] and in Montreal at the Imagine Brazil / Artists' books - DHC/ART Foundation for Contemporary Art.[7] Lucas Simões also exhibited in Brazil at Galeria Vermelho, Galeria Emma Thomas, Centro Cultural São Paulo and the 10th Mercosul Biennial in Porto Alegre.[8][9][10][11]

In 2014, his work has been exhibited at gallery The Place Downstairs in London; the Museu de Arte Moderna Aloísio Magalhães in Recife, Brazil; the Soundout Festival in Berlin; at the international art fair ARCO in Madrid;[12] and he had a solo exhibit at Galeria Emma Thomas in São Paulo as part of the SP-Arte Fair.[13] Lucas Simões also had a show at the Hospital Matarazzo, in São Paulo entitled 'It will all be gone.' [14] His work 'NotUrna' was shown at Instituto Pivô and Instituto Figueiredo Ferraz.[15]

His exhibition at Galeria Pivô in São Paulo in 2012 was featured in an article at the New Museum website in New York City.[16] In July 2013 Lucas Simões' series "Quasi Cinema" and "Unportraits and Unmemories" were exhibited at Caixa Cultural in São Paulo[17][18] and in Rio de Janeiro.[19]
