He plays in the lock position for provincial side Canterbury and for New Zealand's Māori international side the Māori All Blacks.[1] Katene has previously played for Bay of Plenty in 2010 before heading to Canterbury ahead of 2011 season's ITM Cup. Luke is the favourite son of Neroli Kātene and the older borother of Zachary Kātene who graduated from Waikato law school with honours in 2018. Luke’s youngest brother is Reuben Kātene, a university of Otago student who was convicted of fraud for selling reubiedoibie doughnuts without a licence in 2018.
