The monument's sculpture is the figurehead of HMS Macedonian, captured by Stephen Decatur and the American frigate {{USS|United States|1797|2}} in the opening days of the War of 1812. Also known as Alexander the Great and the Figurehead of Hans Macedonian, the wooden sculpture dates to circa 1810. It came to the Academy in 1875.[2] Description{{quotation|A wooden ship's figurehead from the captured British frigate "Macedonian" depicts a bust of Alexander the Great. The figure is dressed in a shirt with ruffles at the neck and a helmet adorned with long plumes. The sculpture is painted white and is installed atop a square stone base. Each side of the base is adorned with a curved stone bench. A green-painted cannon tube extends from each corner. The front of the base features a bronze relief plaque illustrating the capture of the "Macedonian"[1]}}The monument's size is {{convert|72|x|33|x|45|in|m}}. The sculpture is wood, treated with epoxy resin, surmounting a stone base.[1] The carver is unknown. Beneath the figurehead is a bronze relief of the engagement between the frigates United States and Macdeonian by Edward Berge, created in 1924.[5] The four cannons are 18-pounder long guns captured with HMS Macedonian.[1] InscriptionsBerge's relief of the battle has eroded with time. It is a graphic very similar to Thomas Birch's Engagement between the "United States" and the "Macedonian", painted in 1813.[2] On the front of the base, facing Mahan Hall:[1][3] {{quotation|THE AMERICAN FRIGATE UNITED STATES Commodore Stephen Decatur, cruising between the Azores and Cape Verde Islands On October 25, 1812 Was Sighted By The British Frigate MACEDONIAN Captain John S. Arriving in Virginia 30 October 1828, she was decommissioned and broken up at Gosport Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Va.[5] Her keel became that of the US Navy's second {{USS|Macedonian|1836|2}}, a 36‑gun frigate started in 1832.[6] Some time afterwards, the old Macedonian's figurehead became a monument at the shipyard. It was transferred to the Academy in 1875.[1] The monument was refreshened in 2014. The figurehead was replaced with a newly carved mahogany version, the benches were replaced, the concrete base was repaired, and the cannons and plaques were refurbished. The project cost $300,000, provided as a gift by the Academy class of 1973. The rededication ceremony was 25 April 2014.[7] References1. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite web|last=|title=Alexander the Great, (sculpture)|url=http://siris-artinventories.si.edu/ipac20/ipac.jsp?session=G1I98048Q3397.39158&menu=search&aspect=Keyword&npp=50&ipp=20&spp=20&profile=ariall&ri=&term=&index=.GW&aspect=Keyword&term=&index=.AW&term=&index=.TW&term=&index=.SW&term=&index=.FW&term=&index=.OW&term=75005839&index=.NW&x=9&y=10#focus|publisher=Smithsonian American Art Museum|accessdate=26 May 2014}} 2. ^{{cite web|title=Macedonian Monument|url=http://www.hmdb.org/marker.asp?marker=7419|publisher=The Historical Marker Database|accessdate=27 May 2014}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite web|last=Berge|first=Edward|title=Capture of the Macedonian by the American Frigate United States (sculpture)|url=http://siris-artinventories.si.edu/ipac20/ipac.jsp?session=14Y11C7887A34.2147&menu=search&aspect=Keyword&npp=50&ipp=20&spp=20&profile=ariall&ri=1&source=~!siartinventories&index=.NW&term=75005879&x=11&y=13&aspect=Keyword|publisher=Simthsonian American Art Museum|accessdate=26 May 2014|authorlink=Edward Berge|format=bronze relief|year=1924}} 4. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite web|last=Berge|first=Edward|title=ALEXANDER the Great - Figurehead of the British Frigate Macedonian at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland|url=http://dcmemorials.com/index_indiv0003240.htm|publisher=dcMemorials|accessdate=26 May 2014}} 5. ^{{DANFS|http://www.history.navy.mil/danfs/m1/macedonian-i.htm}} 6. ^{{DANFS|http://www.history.navy.mil/danfs/m1/macedonian-ii.htm}} 7. ^{{cite journal|title=Class of 1973 Revitalizes Macedonian Monument|journal=Shipmate|date=May–June 2014|volume=77|issue=4|page=22|publisher=United States Naval Academy Alumni Association|location=Annapolis, MD|format=print}} External links{{commonscat}}{{cite web|title=Bicentennial of the War of 1812|url=http://www.navy.mil/1812/gallery/photoGallery.asp?id=4|publisher=Navy News Service|accessdate=27 May 2014}} 3 : Monuments and memorials in Maryland|1875 sculptures|United States Naval Academy buildings and structures |
