}} Machel Waikenda ({{IPAc-en|m|ə|ˈ|ʃ|ɛ|l|_|w|aɪ|ˈ|k|ɛ|n|d|ə}} {{respell|mə|SHEL|_|wy|KEN|də}}; born 23 April 1981) is a Kenyan politician and media entrepreneur. He was the director of communications in Kenya's ruling party, The National Alliance from April 2012 to August 2013.[1][2] At present, he works in the National Oversight Board in The National Alliance.[3]

Education and Early life

Machel Waikenda was born on 23 April 1981 in Kiambu County and was named ‘Machel’ in honor of Samora Machel, the former president of Mozambique that his father, a Pan Africanist, admired. His father was a banker who worked in Central Bank of Kenya and his mother worked in the civil service.

Waikenda spent most of his upbringing living in different towns in Kenya and grew up in taita taveta, Kilifi and Kaloleni. His parents thereafter moved to Nairobi where he completed the last year of primary school and sat for his KCSE at St. Mary’s school. Thereafter, he went to the Makini School where he completed his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE)..

After his initial education in Nairobi, he completed his bachelor's in electrical engineering from the University of Florida in August 2006, and his MBA from University of Phoenix in December 2012. Currently, he is completing his doctorate in business administration at the University of Phoenix.[4] He has been married to Rose Njoroge since 2011 and they have a child.[5]

Professional career

Waikenda started his career as first officer pilot in Kenya Airways.[6] He is the founder of Blackstar Entertainment, Kenya.[7][8] During April 2013, Kenyan media reported that Waikenda created the official accounts for the Kenyan President.[9]

Political association

Waikenda Joined The National Alliance of Kenya in April 2012. He was the chief coordinator of the 2012 by-elections of Kangema, Ndhiwa and Kajiado North constituencies. Waikenda was the director of communications and secretary of arts and entertainment of The National Alliance, from April 2012 to August 2013 and he led the media and communications department of the party during the 2013 elections.[10]

After the success of The National Alliance in presidential and general elections held on 4 March 2013, Waikenda was appointed as a member of the National Olympics Committee Youth Commission.[11] He is a member of New Partnerships for African Development (NEPAD) Presidential Taskforce on the improvement of Kenya's governance indices.[12]

Kenya's youth

Through media, he advocated, the proposed government's framework to allocate 2.5 per cent of the GDP annually to establish a Youth Enterprise Capital Fund for youth access interest-free business financing[14] and government's announcement for allocation of 30% of its procurement tenders to young entrepreneurs.
