Sic Transit Vir is the twelfth episode from the third season of the science-fiction television series Babylon 5. It is a Latin phrase which translates as "thus passes Vir".

Synopsis

Ivanova dreams she arrived for on the Command deck "completely unprepared for [her] work" (in other words, naked). Meanwhile, Vir Cotto arrives on Centauri Prime to deliver his reports from the Minbari homeworld before returning to Babylon 5. After Vir is praised for his work, the minister tells him a joke: What's more dangerous than a locked room full of angry Narns? One angry Narn with the key. Upon his return to his quarters, Vir finds a number of angry Narns waiting inside for him, one with a key to lock him in (also apparently a bad dream).

Sometime later, Vir arrives on Babylon 5 and meets with Ambassador Mollari. Hearing that Vir's work on Minbar has gone better than expected, he offers Vir a gift: Lyndisty, his Centauri wife-to-be. Vir is hesitant: he wants to marry someone he falls in love with rather than have an arranged marriage, but Lyndisty tries to help prove she is his perfect mate. Later, while walking and discussing their odd compatibility, the two are attacked by a Narn. The commotion brings Sheridan, who was having a dinner date with Delenn, down to stop the fight before security arrives. The Narn is killed when security demands he lower his weapon.

Ivanova has recently learned of a large number of Narn being passed through the station, and from their records, find their papers have all been signed by a Centauri named "Abrahamo Lincolni". Recognizing this as a very un-Centauri play on the name Abraham Lincoln, Ivanova gets Vir to admit that he is Abrahamo. He needed a name to use to arrange for work papers that would allow him to move wounded Narn off their homeworld to Centauri Prime to work the Narn in much better conditions, a matter he claims was much better treatment than they got on Narn. With the attempted attack Ivanova reviews the records and alerts Sheridan that the dead Narn's brother is still on the station and likely in the midst of a blood oath his brother had taken on--putting Vir's life in danger.

Sheridan and Ivanova meet privately with Vir and Mollari. Ivanona explains Vir's actions to Mollari, who is appalled by them at first until Ivanova reports that all the Narn that Vir had shipped out have apparently been killed. Hence why do the Narn have a blood oath on him? Mollari is pleased by this news, but Vir admits that in reality once he had been able to have the Narn leave their homeworld, he was then free from his Minbari post to smuggle them through Babylon 5 to other safe locations under new identities, but had reported them dead to avoid any Centauri from investigating the deaths further. Meanwhile, Lyndisty is waiting for Vir to show up for a meeting when the brother of the dead Narn discreetly follows her.

Vir meets with Lyndisty and she takes him to her quarters where he finds that she has subdued and tied up the Narn. Lyndisty proceeds to talk about how unworthy the Narn are of life and says she subdued her attacker to give Vir the benefit of killing the Narn with his own weapon. Vir is aghast at Lyndisty's attitude and learns that she had recognized the Narn and his brother from a village that she had witnessed being destroyed. Vir realizes that the Narn had been seeking out her, and not him, for her part in the village's destruction. He manages to walk away without harming the Narn.

Later, Mollari tells Vir that he has been pulled from the Minbari embassy and instead will stay on Babylon 5 to continue being instructed by Mollari. Further, Mollari has taken steps to mask Vir's involvement with the Narn and cancelled all further Narn transports in a discreet manner. Vir says goodbye to Lyndisty, who still feels they are perfect for each other and will be waiting for him on Centauri. In order to stop her bad dreams, Ivanova decides to take advantage of the "Abrahamo Lincolni" name, creating a fake personality around Sheridan to continue the work Vir was doing up until the Centauri discovered it.
