Biography

The Self-Titled Years (2014 - 2016)

Malacoda was formed in 2013 by multi-instrumentalist Lucas Di Mascio. Originally Malacoda started off as a recording project for him to put out his own music. Working with Joel Kazmi (Sum 41, Rush, The Tea Party), who produced and engineered the self-titled debut, every song was written by Lucas with some songs being tweaked in the arrangement and melodic departments by Joel. The only other personnel on the recording of the album were a few vocalists that had recorded with Joel in the past, as well as session drummer Da-Rell Clifton and session guitarist Matthew Phillip who played all of the guitar solos. The album was mastered by Larry Lachman.

Many musicians were auditioned for the live aspect of the recording project and this is when the band started to take shape and become its own entity. Having to engage full-time with Malacoda's inner workings in order to keep it afloat, Lucas left all of his other projects to focus solely on Malacoda. Though there was a consistent line-up for a time, live performances never transpired with this line up. Wanting to delve more into extreme forms of metal after many initial mixed responses from the metal community as to whether or not the band should be classified as rock or metal, Lucas wanted to bring in other professional musicians whose expertise was specifically in heavy metal performance as well as to self-produce it in order it maintain a consistent sound.

Ritualis Aeterna (2016 - 2018)

On October 1, 2016, the band revealed a teaser trailer to an upcoming music video slated for release on Halloween on various social media outlets. The teaser showed glimpses of visual aesthetic changes to the band's look, as well as the new live line-up all to the sound of a symphonic score. Jonah Weingarten (Pyramaze), Mike Harshaw (ex-Annihilator), and Brad Casarin (ex-Grade) are some of the more well known new additions to the band. The band released a music video for a track called Penny Dreadful on Halloween of 2016.

The band released Ritualis Aeterna on December 2, 2016 and soon after things in the band went dark.

By the summer of 2017 the band announced a new lineup consisting of Lucas Di Mascio on vocals and keyboards, Cooper Seldon and Daniel Alonzi on guitars. Michael Farina of Farewell to Freeway fame recorded drums for the new, as yet unreleased music written by the band in August 2017 as per the band's social media accounts.

On November 29, 2017 the band announced they were signing with Rockshots Records in Europe and would be re-releasing Ritualis Aeterna on January 19, 2018.

Lyrical Themes

Many of the band's lyrics use various aspects of mythology, ranging from gorgons in Greek mythology as well as aspects from Christian myth. It should be stated that while the lyrics may seem grandiose and epic in scope, they shouldn't be taken at face value. Using these stories as metaphors for personal experiences, the lyrics are meant to be open to interpretation yet still be enjoyed at face value. In Rituals Aeterna the band focused more on horror themes as apparent in the lyrics to "Penny Dreadful", based on the television show of the same name, and "I Got A Letter", loosely based on Silent Hill 2.
