However, less than two years after the merger, Singapore was expelled from the federation and joined the United Nations by itself on 21 September 1965.

Malaysia plays an active role within the organisation with participation in almost all peace-keeping missions conducted by the organisation such as on the United Nations Operation in the Congo, the Protection Force in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Transition Assistance Group in Namibia, the operation in Somalia, the mission in East Timor and the Interim Force in Lebanon.[1]

Malaysia served as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for four terms, 1965, 1989–1990, 1999–2000 and 2015–2016.[2] In 2015, Malaysia introduced a UNSC draft resolution, calling for the establishment of an international criminal tribunal, in response to the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. The resolution failed to pass as a result of Russia's veto.[3]

UN Human Rights Council

Malaysia served as a member of the Human Rights Council from 2006–2009 and 2010–2013. In 2017, Malaysia failed in its bid for a seat at the council.[4]

International Law Commission

In November 2016, Malaysia lobbied for its candidate, Professor Datuk Dr. Rahmat Mohamad to be elected as a member of the Commission. However, Malaysia did not succeed in receiving the adequate number of votes.[5]

UN Agencies in Malaysia

There are seven UN agencies with a physical presence in Malaysia. They are, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations University (UNU) and the World Food Programme (WFP).[6]

Financial contribution
