Manfred Börner (16 March 1929 in Rochlitz – 15 January 1996 in Ulm) was a German physicist.

Life

Börner developed the first working fiber-optical data transmission system in 1965. He received a patent for an "electro-optical transmission system utilizing lasers".[1][2]

From 1954 to 1979 he worked for the German Telefunken GmbH. Later, from 1979 to 1995, he was professor at the Technical University Munich.

Awards and memberships

  • 1962: Award of the Nachrichtentechnischen Gesellschaft (NTG in the VDE; today Informationstechnische Gesellschaft) for proficiencies on the field of elektromecanical filters and power-line communication
  • 1982: Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
  • 1990: Eduard-Rhein-Award by Eduard Rhein Foundation
