Martin James Durkan Sr. (June 30, 1923 – May 29, 2005) was an American politician in the state of Washington. He served in the Washington House of Representatives from 1957 to 1959 and in the Senate from 1959 to 1975.[1][2] Durkan also ran unsuccessfully for Governor of Washington in 1972 and the U.S. House of Representatives in 1977.

After his retirement from the Senate, Durkan became one of the state's top lobbyists. Durkan had eight children with his wife Lorraine, including Seattle mayor and former U.S. attorney Jenny Durkan.[3]

Early life and education

Martin was born to a Catholic family in Great Falls, Montana. His father, Martin Durkan, immigrated from County Mayo, Ireland,[4] and served one term in the Montana House of Representatives from 1913 to 1914;[5][6] his mother was a schoolteacher.[7]

Durkan attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, and fought with a U.S. Navy amphibious squad in the South Pacific Theater of World War II. He earned a law degree from the University of Washington School of Law in 1953 and entered a private practice in Seattle.[8][9]

Career

Durkan was elected to the House of Representatives in 1956, from the 31st district, at the age of 31.[7]
