Jewels never had any formal training and painted in a naïve style, mainly landscapes, portraits, fishing and harbour scenes in oil. She was a friend of artist Dod Procter, and her sister Cordelia was married to the sculptor Frank Dobson. She was widowed by 1918 and was encouraged to paint by Cedric Morris.[1] She gained national attention after Augustus John convinced her to exhibit her works in London in 1928.[2] References1. ^{{cite book|last1=Yakir|first1=Nedira|title=Women Artists and Modernism|date=1998|publisher=Manchester University Press|location=Manchester|isbn=0-7190-5082-0|pages=116–117|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=vVvZAAAAIAAJ&lpg=PA116&ots=fW8ndthjNu&dq=%22Mary%20Jewels%22%20naive&pg=PA116#v=onepage&q&f=false|chapter=Cornubia: gender, geography and genealogy in St Ives modernism}} 2. ^{{cite book|editor= Hardie, Melissa|title=100 Years in Newlyn: Diary of a Gallery|date=1995|publisher=Patten Press in association with Newlyn Art Gallery|location=Penzance|isbn=1-872229-22-0|page=79|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=C6R_4AYYlHoC&lpg=PA1953&dq=%22Mary%20Jewels%22%20primitive&pg=PA1930#v=onepage&q&f=false}} External links
