The Materials Processing Institute is a research centre serving organisations that work in advanced materials, low carbon energy and the circular economy.

The Institute’s campus and head office is based in Tees Valley, in the North East of England.

Background

The Materials Processing Institute was established in 1944 as the British Iron and Steel Research Association (BISRA), as a central research centre for the iron and steel industries.

Many of the advanced processes in the 20th Century, which are now standard across industry, were first developed at the Institute.

Present day

The Materials Processing Institute works with steel organisations from across the world, including Tata Steel, Liberty House Group and British Steel, while welcoming delegations from global, industry partners such as voestalpine AG,[1] thyssenkrupp,[2] ArcelorMittal and Sidenor.

The SME Technology Centre collaborates with industry and academic partners to support SMEs operating in Tees Valley and the wider North East region, through the Innovate Tees Valley and Tees Valley Business Start Up programmes, which are part funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

In 2016, the Institute launched a commercial steel-making operation from its Normanton Steel plant, which has the capabilities to produce and export specialist steels.[3][4][5]

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen visited the Institute for a tour of its facilities and campus in July 2017, further strengthening its ties with local government and key political figures.[6]

In 2017, the Materials Processing Institute and Liberty House Group announced a landmark, multimillion-pound partnership with the Institute to deliver technical and scientific expertise to help Liberty develop advanced manufacturing processes and a new generation of products across its plants in the UK and Australia.[7][8][9]

Furthermore, the Materials Processing Institute is a member of UK Steel and was ratified, in October 2017, as an affiliated member of the World Steel Association (worldsteel), the international trade body for the iron and steel industry.[10]

In 2018, the Institute engaged in a partnership with leading intellectual property (IP) firm, Marks & Clerk to support SMEs and start-ups engaging in R&D across the North East and Tees Valley. The partnership was officially launched by Redcar MP Anna Turley.[11]

Services

The Materials Processing Institute possesses knowledge across traditional, new and expanding industries within the advanced materials and low carbon energy sectors, which includes steel, metals and alloys, chemical processes, aerospace and defence, energy, mining and quarrying, construction, rail, transport and infrastructure, offshore, subsea and nuclear.

Supporting its team of engineers, scientists and researchers, the Institute is home to equipment and laboratory facilities.

Services delivered by the Materials Processing Institute include:

  • Provision of Process Support

Using its experience with large items of process plant and equipment operating in hot and hostile environments, the Institute provides forensic insight into complex process and plant problems.

  • Materials and Metals Industry Consultancy

Provided in support of both process and product developments across the full Materials and Metals industry supply chain. This includes the provision of a range of relevant pilot and demonstration facilities that enable the Institute's clients to evaluate and demonstrate new process or product developments and to test new materials and equipment.

  • General Pilot and Demonstration Facilities

Fully serviced space is available, both indoors and out for large and complex pilot process equipment that allows the Institute's clients to reduce the risks associated with product and process development away from the risks and pressures of production.

  • Iron and Steelmaking Process Technology

With roots in the Iron and Steel industry, the Institute offers process support and technology development to a number of the world’s steelmakers and equipment suppliers.

  • Commercial Steelmaking

In 2016, the Institute launched a commercial steelmaking operation from its Normanton Steel plant. Supported by a suite of testing and development laboratories, the Institute’s experienced production team delivers commercial manufacturing across a range of steel types, to meet customers’ bespoke requirements, which includes smaller orders that cannot be produced economically in larger plants.{{cn|date=August 2018}}

  • Supporting Science

Complementing the services above, the Institute has extensive capabilities in mathematical or physical modelling; thermodynamic modelling; mineral, metallurgical and analytical laboratories, and associated techniques and technologies.

Specialist services

  • SME Technology Centre

The Materials Processing Institute supports businesses throughout the North East of England through its SME Technology Centre.

The Centre provides technical support, facilities support and business support services to companies from various sectors. There are also a number of SMEs operating from the Institute’s campus.{{cn|date=August 2018}}

  • The Doctoral Academy

The Academy has formed relationships with industrial companies, including SMEs, universities and Centres for Doctoral Training (CDT).{{cn|date=August 2018}}
