His research focuses on the persistence of proteins in ancient samples, using modelling to explore the racemization of amino acids and thermal history to predict the survival of DNA and other molecules.[3] Using a combination of approaches (including immunology and protein mass spectrometry) his research detects and interprets protein remnants in archaeological and fossil remains. With former PhD student Dr Mike Buckley he developed ZooMS (Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry)[4] a way to rapidly identify bone and other collagen based materials using peptide mass fingerprinting. In 2014 he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy, the United Kingdom's national academy for the humanities and social sciences.[5][6] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://dg.dk/en/2016/05/20/here-are-the-seven-new-niels-bohr-professors// |title=Niels Bohr Professors |publisher=Danish National Research Foundation |date=2016-05-20 |accessdate=2016-10-01}} {{FBA 2014}}{{Authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Collins, Matthew}}{{UK-archaeologist-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.york.ac.uk/archaeology/staff/academic-staff/matthew-collins/ |title=Prof. Matthew Collins - Archaeology, The University of York |publisher=York University |date=2014-07-17 |accessdate=2014-07-21}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://thermal-age.eu/ |title=Thermal Age Website |accessdate=2014-10-25}} 4. ^{{cite book|title=Van Doorn, N.
