A Scotland international representative, he previously played in the Super League for the Wigan Warriors, Hull F.C. and the Warrington Wolves, as well as in the National Rugby League for the Gold Coast Titans.[2][3] He has now signed a 2 year deal with Championship club Toronto Wolfpack.[4] BackgroundRussell was born in Irvine, North Ayrshire, Scotland. CareerRussell's Super League career started with the Wigan Warriors, playing some games on loan to Hull FC. He then agreed a two-year deal with Australian NRL team, the Gold Coast Titans, but returned to England a season later. Russell was named in the Scotland squad for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup.[5][6] He was one of the star players in the tournament. On 16 April 2014, the entertaining, fast running Scottish fullback, signed a new three-year deal that would keep him at Warrington until November 2017.[7] In 2016, Russell was part of Scotland's Four Nations campaign, where he scored a try in their second game against England. He also played in the historic game against New Zealand, where Scotland's 18-18 draw saw them become the first 'fourth nation' to earn a point since the Four Nations series inaugurated in 2009.[8] References1. ^1 2 {{cite web|title=Matthew Russell|url=https://web.archive.org/web/19950000000000/http://warringtonwolves.com/team-player-13|website=warringtonwolves.com|publisher=Warrington Wolves|accessdate=17 August 2014}} 2. ^1 {{cite web|url=https://www.loverugbyleague.com/stats/players/matty-russell|title=Profile at loverugbyleague.com|publisher=loverugbyleague.com|date=31 December 2017|accessdate=1 January 2018}} 3. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.rugbyleagueproject.org/players/matthew-russell/summary.html|title=Statistics at rugbyleagueproject.org|publisher=rugbyleagueproject.org|date=31 December 2017|accessdate=1 January 2018}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www1.skysports.com/rugby-league/news/12215/8136452/wigan-reserve-full-back-matty-russell-has-agreed-a-two-year-deal-with-nrl-outfit-gold-coast-titans|title=Wigan reserve fullback Matty Russell has agreed a two year deal with NRL outfit Gold Coast Titans|publisher=skysports.com|date=31 December 2017|accessdate=1 January 2018}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.rlwc2013.com/rugby-league-world-news/article/1128/mccormack-finalises-scotland-squad|title=McCormack finalises Scotland Squad|publisher=rlwc2013.com|date=31 December 2017|accessdate=1 January 2018}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/rugby/uncapped-russell-named-in-scotlands-world-cup-squad.1380539400|title=Uncapped Russell named in Scotland's World Cup squad|publisher=heraldscotland.com|date=31 December 2017|accessdate=1 January 2018}} 7. ^{{cite web|url=https://web.archive.org/web/19950000000000/http://www.superleague.co.uk/article/29999/matty-russell-seals-new-wolves|title=Matty Russell seals new Wolves deal|publisher=superleague.co.uk|date=31 December 2017|accessdate=1 January 2018}} 8. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/nov/11/new-zealand-scotland-four-nations-match-report|title=Scotland make history in Four Nations draw with holders New Zealand|publisher=theguardian.com|date=31 December 2017|accessdate=1 January 2018}} External links{{commons category}}
