The house was built between 1856 and 1860, and is a two-story, five bay,"L"-shaped Gothic Revival style dwelling. It features a three-story-octagonal tower in the center bay and castellation along the parapet. The house was enlarged considerably around 1920 through a large addition to the west end for expanded service areas.[3] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.[2] HistoryBuilt between 1856 and 1860, Melrose was built by Dr. James H. Murray and his brother Edward Murray. They named the castle after Melrose Abbey, a castle in their ancestral home of Scotland. In April 1862, Melrose was occupied by Union soldiers during the American Civil War, and later served as a hospital.[5] The property was first sold in December 1863 and then changed hands many times. In 2017 the 9,000-square-foot house and 50-acre wooded lot was listed for sale at $2.2 million.[4] Cultural referencesA visit to Melrose Castle inspired mystery writer Mary Roberts Rinehart to write her first bestselling novel, The Circular Staircase (1908).[4] References1. ^{{cite web|title=Virginia Landmarks Register |url=http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/register_counties_cities.htm|publisher=Virginia Department of Historic Resources|accessdate=5 June 2013}} {{National Register of Historic Places in Virginia}}{{FauquierCountyVA-NRHP-stub}}{{Virginia-struct-stub}}2. ^1 {{NRISref|version=2010a}} 3. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/Counties/Fauquier/030-0070_Melrose_1983_Final_Nomination.pdf |title=National Register of Historic Places Inventory/Nomination: Melrose |author=Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission Staff| date=September 1981|publisher=Virginia Department of Historic Resources}} and Accompanying photo 4. ^1 2 {{cite news |last=Heincer |first=Amanda |date=May 24, 2017 |title=Historic castle for sale in Warrenton |url=https://www.fauquier.com/news/historic-castle-for-sale-in-warrenton/article_4b72847c-4036-11e7-936e-973c15b65155.html |work=Fauquier Times |location= |access-date=2018-10-13 }} 5 : Houses on the National Register of Historic Places in Virginia|Gothic Revival architecture in Virginia|Houses completed in 1860|Houses in Fauquier County, Virginia|National Register of Historic Places in Fauquier County, Virginia |
