The Melville Society is an organization for the study of author Herman Melville. It has approximately 400 members, comprising both individuals and institutions.[1] The society was established in 1945 or 1946.[1][2] It claims to be among the oldest "international single-author societies".[1] Its primary publication is Leviathan: A Journal of Melville Studies, issued three times per year.[3] The society has formed a cultural project in collaboration with the New Bedford Whaling Museum, the host of the Melville Society Archive, and has an editorial office at Hofstra University.[1][2] It meets primarily at the American Literature Association and Modern Language Association annual conferences. It has also held a number of international meetings.[1] References1. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite web|url=http://people.hofstra.edu/john_L_bryant/Melville/soc.html|accessdate=15 March 2012|title=The Melville Society|publisher=Hofstra}} 2. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.whalingmuseum.org/learn/library/melville-society|title=Melville Society Cultural Project|accessdate=15 March 2012|publisher=New Bedford Whaling Museum|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120316151810/http://whalingmuseum.org/learn/library/melville-society|archivedate=16 March 2012|df=}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/journal.asp?ref=1525-6995|accessdate=15 March 2012|title=Leviathan|publisher=Wiley-Blackwell}} External links
