She is thought to have been the first Māori woman to teach Māori language at a New Zealand university. BiographyBorn in 1920 near Te Hapua,[1] Penfold affiliated to the Ngāti Kurī iwi.[2] She was educated at Queen Victoria School in Auckland[3] and Auckland Girls' Grammar School.[4] After qualifying as a teacher, she taught at schools around the North Island before returning to university to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree. For over 30 years Penfold lectured in Māori language at the University of Auckland[2] and is believed to have been the first Māori woman to do so at a university in New Zealand.[5] Her translations of nine of Shakespeare's sonnets into Māori were published in the book Nga Waiata Aroha a Hekepia in 2000.[6] She was also a member of the editorial team for the seventh edition of Williams' Dictionary of the Maori Language, published in 1971.[2] Penfold served on the Māori Education Foundation and the University of Auckland's marae establishment committee. She was an executive member of the Broadcasting Commission between 1989 and 1991 and also served as a Human Rights Commissioner from 2002 to 2007.[2][7] In 1999 Penfold was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Literature by the University of Auckland.[5] In the 2001 Queen's Birthday Honours, she was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Māori.[8] She was awarded Te Tohu Aroha mō Ngoi Kumeroa Pewhairangi for her contribution to te reo Māori (the Māori language) in the 2008 Ngā Taonga Toi a Te Waka Toi – Te Waka Toi awards from Creative New Zealand.[9] References1. ^{{cite news | url=http://www.maoritelevision.com/news/regional/te-ao-maori-mourns-loss-great-leader | title=Te Ao Māori mourns the loss of a great leader | date=2 April 2014 | work=Māori Television news | accessdate=2 April 2014 | first=Harata | last=Brown}} {{Authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Penforld, Merimeri}}{{NewZealand-bio-stub}}{{Māori-stub}}2. ^1 2 3 {{cite web |url=http://www.hrc.co.nz/human-rights-environment/about-the-human-rights-commission/commissioners/former-human-rights-commissioners/dr-merimeri-penfold/ |title=Dr Merimeri Penfold |date= |publisher=New Zealand Human Rights Commission |accessdate=2 April 2014 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20140328092916/http://www.hrc.co.nz/human-rights-environment/about-the-human-rights-commission/commissioners/former-human-rights-commissioners/dr-merimeri-penfold/ |archivedate=28 March 2014 |df=dmy-all }} 3. ^{{cite news | url=http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=153339 | title=A lesson in school spirit | date=1 October 2000 | work=New Zealand Herald | accessdate=2 April 2014 | first= | last= }} 4. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.thebigidea.co.nz/node/31009 |title=Te Waka Toi awards celebrate Maori artists |date=3 September 2008 |website=The Big Idea – Te Aria Nui |accessdate=2 April 2014 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20140407084738/http://www.thebigidea.co.nz/node/31009 |archivedate=7 April 2014 |df=dmy-all }} 5. ^1 {{cite news | title=Honorary doctorates awarded | date=27 October 1999 | work=Evening Post | page=2}} 6. ^{{cite news | title=Biblio file | date=10 March 2002 | work=Sunday Star Times | first=Iain | last=Sharp | page=2}} 7. ^{{cite news | title=Human rights commissioners | date=26 April 2002 | work=National Business Review | page=34}} 8. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.dpmc.govt.nz/node/386 |title=Queen's Birthday honours list 2001 |date=4 June 2001 |publisher=Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet |accessdate=2 April 2014}} 9. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.creativenz.govt.nz/en/news/te-waka-toi-awards-celebrate-maori-artists |title=Te Waka Toi awards celebrate Māori artists |date=30 October 2008 |publisher=Creative NZ |accessdate=2 April 2014 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20140407062806/http://www.creativenz.govt.nz/en/news/te-waka-toi-awards-celebrate-maori-artists |archivedate=7 April 2014 |df=dmy-all }} 8 : 1920 births|2014 deaths|Ngāti Kurī|People from the Northland Region|University of Auckland alumni|University of Auckland faculty|New Zealand Māori academics|Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit |
