She was born and raised in Bamberg, Bavaria, Germany. CareerMerve Akıl played in her hometown club TSG 05 Bamberg until the end of 2012–13 season before she moved to Turkey.[2] She obtained her license in Turkey for Gazikentspor in Gaziantep on 13 September 2013.
