He represented Cariboo from 1909 to 1916 in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia as a Conservative. He was born in 1849 in Clonakilty, County Cork, the son of Daniel J. Callanan,[1] and was educated at the University of Dublin[2] and in Paris. From 1875 to 1873, he practised in Kilbrittain and Rosscarbery.[1] He came to Canada, settling in the Northwest Territories. Later, Callanan practised in Nanaimo and Victoria for eight years before moving to Quesnel in 1894[2] and Barkerville in 1899.[1] Callanan was a physician for the Royal Cariboo Hospital in Barkerville. In 1885, he married Hannah Healy.[2] He retired to New Westminster in 1922. In 1929, Callanan died at St. Mary's Hospital in New Westminster after an extended illness.[3] References1. ^{{cite book |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=nLd_9nedj7AC&pg=PA20 |title=Scalpels & buggywhips: medical pioneers of Central BC |pages=19–20 |year=1997 |isbn=1-895811-43-0 |publisher=Heritage House Publishing Co |last=Lee |first=Eldon |accessdate=2011-09-12}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Callanan, Michael}}{{BritishColumbia-politician-stub}}2. ^1 2 {{cite book |url=http://www.ebooksread.com/authors-eng/c-w-parker/northern-whos-who-a-biographical-dictionary-of-men-and-women-kra/page-10-northern-whos-who-a-biographical-dictionary-of-men-and-women-kra.shtml |title=Northern who's who; a biographical dictionary of men and women |last=Parker |first=C W |volume=Volume 1 |year=1916 |page=113 |accessdate=2011-09-12}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite journal |title=Obituaries |journal=Canadian Medical Association Journal |page=450 |volume=20 |issue=4 |date=April 1929 |pmc=1710679}} 5 : 1849 births|1929 deaths|Politicians from County Cork|Irish emigrants to Canada (before 1923)|British Columbia Conservative Party MLAs |
