Pickering (24 November 1941 – 5 January 1995)[1] was an Australian rules footballer who played with North Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Early life & familyPickering was the son of Wally Pickering, who was a legendary forward for Stawell.[2][2] Wally Pickering played in the club's inaugural Wimmera Football League premiership in 1939.[3] From 1956 to 1959, Pickering went to St Patrick's College, Ballarat.[4] Football careerPickering, a ruckman from Stawell, was sought by both Essendon and North Melbourne.[5] Secured by the latter, Picking made three appearances early in the 1961 VFL season, before he was sidelined with an ankle injury and then a dislocated elbow, which ended his season.[6][7] It wasn't until the 16th round of the 1962 season that he returned to senior football, a game against Melbourne at Arden Street Oval, in which he kicked three goals.[6][8] The following round, at Kardinia Park, he kicked another three goals, from a forward pocket.[9] His next appearance, in round 18, would be his last for North Melbourne.[6] He decided to return to Stawell in 1963 and remained with the club for many years, finishing his Wimmera career with 220 games and three club best and fairest awards.[10][11] In 1969 he was the joint leading vote getter in the Toohey Medal, with Nhill's Rod Coutts, but lost on countback.[11] The league decided in 2003 to award retrospective medals to all players who finished second on countback, which included Pickering.[12] His son, Liam Pickering, a former North Melbourne and Geelong footballer, collected the award on behalf of his father, who died in 1995.[11][13] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://australianfootball.com/players/player/michael+pickering/9307|title=Michael Pickering - Player Bio|publisher=Australian Football|accessdate=1 February 2015}} 2. ^{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article73140921 |title=Goal-kicking Honors to McKey. |newspaper=The Horsham Times |location=Vic. |date=8 September 1939 |accessdate=2 February 2015 |page=2 |publisher=National Library of Australia}} 3. ^{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article73141567 |title=Stawell Wins 1939 Premiership. |newspaper=The Horsham Times|location=Vic. |date=26 September 1939 |accessdate=2 February 2015 |page=6 |publisher=National Library of Australia}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.stpats.vic.edu.au/public/ViewPage.aspx?id=176|title=Old Boys to play VFL/AFL football|publisher=St Patrick's College, Ballarat|accessdate=1 February 2015|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://archive.is/20150202070358/http://www.stpats.vic.edu.au/public/ViewPage.aspx?id=176|archivedate=2 February 2015|df=dmy-all}} 5. ^{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1300&dat=19610412&id=BpVVAAAAIBAJ&sjid=s7EDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6788,1583802|title=Stawell Refuses To Let North Have Pickering|date=12 April 1961|work=The Age|page=20|accessdate=1 February 2015}} 6. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=http://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/M/Michael_Pickering1_gm.html|title=Michael Pickering - Games Played|publisher=AFL Tables|accessdate=1 February 2015}} 7. ^{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1300&dat=19610712&id=9LAUAAAAIBAJ&sjid=hLoDAAAAIBAJ&pg=3321,1690314|title=Turner Hurt in North Practice|date=12 July 1961|work=The Age|page=18|accessdate=1 February 2015}} 8. ^{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=MDQ-9Oe3GGUC&dat=19620813&printsec=frontpage&hl=en|title=Late Goal Sealed Win for Demons|last=Davis|first=Trevor|date=13 August 1962|work=The Age|accessdate=1 February 2015}} 9. ^{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1300&dat=19620820&id=TnFVAAAAIBAJ&sjid=jJYDAAAAIBAJ&pg=2781,3191668|title=Farmer and Lord Showed the Way|last=Ross|first=John|date=20 August 1962|work=The Age|page=18|accessdate=1 February 2015}} 10. ^{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1300&dat=19630410&id=BYcTAAAAIBAJ&sjid=YpUDAAAAIBAJ&pg=3104,1472014|title=Delanty Runs With North|date=10 April 1963|work=The Age|page=20|accessdate=2 February 2015}} 11. ^1 2 3 {{cite news|url=http://www.mailtimes.com.au/story/952489/at-long-last-mikes-medal/|title=At long last, Mike's medal|last=Lannen|first=Danny|date=16 September 2003|work=Wimmera Mail Times|accessdate=1 February 2015}} 12. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.mailtimes.com.au/story/950951/a-glittering-medal-at-last/|title=A glittering medal, at last!|date=4 February 2003|work=Wimmera Mail Times|accessdate=1 February 2015}} 13. ^{{cite book|last1=Holmesby|first1=Russell|last2=Main|first2=Jim|title=The Encyclopedia Of AFL Footballers| publisher=BAS Publishing|year=2007|isbn=9781920910785}} External links
