Ward was born in Newport, Shropshire[2] and educated at Trinity College, Dublin.[3] Ward was Regius Professor of Divinity at Trinity College, Dublin from 1670 to 1678 and its Provost from 1674 to 1678;[4] Dean of Lismore from 1670 to 1678;[5] Archdeacon of Armagh from 1674 to 1678;[6] Bishop of Ossory from 1678 to 1680;[7] and Derry from 1680;[8] until his death on 3 October 1681.
