A rugby union fullback, Gilbert represented Buller and West Coast at a provincial level, and was a member of the New Zealand national side, the All Blacks, from 1935 to 1936. He played 27 matches for the All Blacks including four internationals.[1] He made his début for Buller as a 19-year old in 1930. At one point in his career he played a few games as a centre three-quarter.[2] Gilbert changed codes at the end of 1937, and travelled to England where he joined rugby league club Bradford Northern as a {{rlp|fb}} in 1938.[2][3][4] He returned to New Zealand following the outbreak of World War II in 1939 having become captain of the Bradford side.[5][6] He was reinstated to rugby union in 1995.[1] References1. ^1 {{cite web|url = http://stats.allblacks.com/asp/Profile.asp?ABID=311|title = Mike Gilbert|last = Luxford|first = Bob|publisher = New Zealand Rugby Museum|accessdate = 19 July 2014}} {{Portal|Rugby union}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Gilbert, Mike}}{{NewZealand-rugbyunion-bio-stub}}{{NewZealand-rugbyleague-bio-stub}}2. ^{{cite news|url= http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=NZH19371221.2.139|title=Turning to league|date=21 December 1937|work=New Zealand Herald|accessdate=19 July 2014|page=15}} 3. ^{{cite news|url= http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=NZH19380309.2.226.2|title=League footballer|date=9 March 1938|work=New Zealand Herald|accessdate=19 July 2014|page=23}} 4. ^{{cite news|title=Swinton's good win over Bradford|date=21 April 1938|work=Manchester Guardian|page=4}} 5. ^1 {{Cite book|title = The Encyclopedia Of New Zealand Rugby|last = Chester|first = Rod|publisher = Moa Publications|year = 1987|isbn = 0-908570-16-3|location = Auckland, New Zealand|pages = 67|last2 = McMillan|first2 = Neville|last3 = Palenski|first3 = Ron}} 6. ^{{cite news|url= http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=NZH19391115.2.176|title=General news|date=15 November 1939|work=New Zealand Herald|accessdate=19 July 2014|page=18}} 11 : 1911 births|2002 deaths|People from Rothesay, Bute|Scottish emigrants to New Zealand|New Zealand rugby union players|New Zealand international rugby union players|Buller rugby union players|New Zealand rugby league players|Bradford Bulls players|Rugby league fullbacks|West Coast rugby union players |
