Going to the hospital to be treated for a horrible wedding night stomach pain, Hanafi receives an accidental sex change operation. After months of recuperation, he tries to pick up the pieces of his life as an unattractive, mannish woman named Fifi. She becomes the opposite of Hanafi. Where he was brusque, she is flirtatious. ReceptionMada Masr praised the film, calling it one of Egypt's cinematic gems. The expanded that the film "breaks every social norm and cinematic cliché of its time. Boy loves girl, boy chases girl, boy sings about girl’s beautiful eyes, and finally boy marries girl. But in Miss Hanafi the boy is the girl! And he/she chooses celibacy and scolds those who chose to marry."[2] They also explained that while other films of the 50's might have had story lines where the men dressed as women, this one was "unusual in its progressive questioning around gender because it is very early, very funny, not particularly political, and it’s set in a working-class neighborhood."[4]The Al-Hanager Arts Centre in Cairo celebrated the work of director Fettin Abdel-Wahab as part of the 2007 Egyptian Centennials exhibition, noting him as a pioneer of the social comedy school of Egyptian cinema, and his film Miss Hanfi as among the most frequently watched and influential.[5] In 2006, Miss Hanafi was determined by Bibliotheca Alexandrina as one of the most important 100 films in the history of Egyptian cinema.[6] References1. ^{{cite book|last1=Boraïe|first1=Sherif|title=Title سنوات الذهبية في السينما المصرية: سينما كايرو، ١٩٣٦-١٩٦٧|year=2008|publisher=American University in Cairo|isbn=9774161734|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=ujaXQHha5Z8C&pg=RA11-PA1954&dq=%22Miss+Hanafi%22&hl=en&sa=X&ei=eVrXVMnlC5HZoATxiICgBQ&ved=0CB8Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=%22Miss%20Hanafi%22&f=false|accessdate=8 February 2015}} 2. ^{{cite book|last1=Oliver Leaman|title=Companion Encyclopaedia of Middle Eastern and North African Film|year=2003|publisher=Routledge|isbn=1134662521|pages=51–54, 87|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=LmSFAgAAQBAJ&pg=PA87&lpg=PA87&dq=%22Miss+Hanafi%22+%28film%29&source=bl&ots=1_cBDht8s0&sig=DVpBU5b4CaZDLm28M7UEZKb0Zcw&hl=en&sa=X&ei=f1DXVMD9PJC5ogSN9oFo&ved=0CEQQ6AEwBg#v=snippet&q=%22Miss%20Hanafi%22&f=false|accessdate=8 February 2015}} 3. ^{{cite book|last1=Darwish, Mustafa|title=Dream Makers on the Nile: A Portrait of Egyptian Cinema|year=1998|publisher=American University in Cairo|isbn=977424429X|pages=21|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=GwBlAAAAMAAJ&q=%22Miss+Hanafi%22+%28film%29&dq=%22Miss+Hanafi%22+%28film%29&hl=en&sa=X&ei=j1jXVNC5KsnSoASm6YHgCg&ved=0CDoQ6AEwBQ}} 4. ^1 2 {{cite news|last1=Amany Ali Shawky|title=Egypt's cinematic gems: Miss Hanafi|url=http://www.madamasr.com/sections/culture/egypts-cinematic-gems-miss-hanafi|accessdate=9 February 2015|publisher=Mada Masr|date=11 October 2014}} 5. ^{{cite news|last1=Hesham|first1=Soha|title=The five musketeers|url=http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/News/5025/23/The-five-musketeers.aspx|accessdate=8 February 2015|publisher=Ahram Online|date=4 January 2014}} 6. ^1 {{cite news|last1=Hesham |first1=Soha |title=The top 100 |url=http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2007/836/cu4.htm |accessdate=8 February 2015 |publisher=Al-Ahram Weekly |date=15 March 2007 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20070322192726/http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2007/836/cu4.htm |archivedate=22 March 2007 |df= }} External links
