Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS)

MIHAS was founded by Shapers Malaysia in 2004 and in 2008, ownership of this Halal event was transferred to the Malaysian government under the auspices of the Malaysia External Trade and Development Corporation (MATRADE). Typically held in April in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for four days, the event is held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and now it is organised at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC).

MIHAS was first held in 2004 at the Malaysia International Exhibition & Convention Centre (MIECC), Mines Resort City, Kuala Lumpur with the assistance and guide of YBhg. Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew, the Founder and Chairman of Country Heights Holdings Berhad. The inaugural event was officiated by the (now former) Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi. That year, there were 330 companies occupying 505 booth spaces from 19 different countries including Malaysia, the country host. MIHAS attracted 17,254 visitors from 42 countries that year.

The key feature of MIHAS is the Incoming Buying Mission (IBM) programme which was first introduced during MIHAS 2005. The business matching programme provides one-to-one discussions and business negotiations between buyers and sellers. The first year resulted in a total sales of RM229.9million. In 2012, the business matching sessions yielded a total generated sales of RM340 million (USD110 million).

IBM is organised by MATRADE and it is conducted a day before the trade show. The participants consists of international buyers from all over the globe who are looking to source Halal products. MIHAS as the World's Largest Halal Trade Exhibition continues to bring about RM1billion in trade revenue into Malaysia annually.

World Halal Summit (WHS)

After 12 successful years, SHAPERS have decided it was time to transform MIHAS to another level of effectiveness and strength to serve the Halal industry better. However, we believe that such a strategic and important move will only have full impact if we receive strong support, endorsement and recognition from all stakeholders in the Halal industry.

By being unified in the global Halal movement, we truly believe that through the World Halal Summit, leaders, stakeholders and captains of the industry will be able to bring the Halal market to another level of consumer acceptance and help to accomplish harmonisation of standards, and regulation of the Halal industry globally. The World Halal Summit incorporated the following elements of Malaysia’s halal programme:

  • 12th MIHAS trade fair
  • 6th JAKIM International Halal Certification Bodies Convention
  • HDC’s World Halal Conference
  • Certifiers Forum
  • Business Forum
  • Academics Forum
  • Scholars Forum

This integrated programme made WHS 2015 the world’s largest Halal sector programme, and reconfirmed Malaysia’s role as a global leader in the Halal marketplace.

Over the past decade, Malaysia has established a well-respected track record of hosting world-class Halal industry events. However, there was a general perception that the conference content over the past few years had become somewhat superficial, and was not keeping up with the pace of the development of the global Halal markets.

WHS 2015 presented an opportunity to take these initiatives to the next level by developing new content, under specialist breakout Forums. These Forums were intended to tackle current topics of real concern to the industry stakeholders, to showcase new research, and to open up a new horizon of opportunity for innovation across various branches of the Halal sector landscape.

The specialist Forums allowed the delegates to go more deeply into specific topics than is normally the case in larger plenary sessions. As the Halal sector develops, there is a need to enable the participants to present and discuss matters in greater depth, and the specialist Forums were designed to fulfil this need.

Planning and Structure

The WHS 2015 was structured to provide the maximum benefit for the participants, with Unified Plenary Sessions to open and close the event, with the Specialist Forums taking up the rest of the allocated time.

This structure allowed the best of both worlds by providing a sense of occasion and togetherness for the opening and closing of the Summit, while enabling in-depth examination and discussion of specific topics in the specialist Forums. The four Specialist Forums were designated for Certifiers, Scholars, Academics and the Business community.

Unified Plenary Sessions

The Unified Sessions covered matters that are of general concern to all Halal sector stakeholders. In general the Unified Plenary sessions were an important element of the Summit. While the breakout Forums were an essential change from the standard conference format, the Unified Sessions gave the summit a sense of occasion and importance that the specialists forums alone could not provide.

Certifiers Forum

The Certifiers Forum was the most well-attended of the specialist Forums, and the one that contained the most controversial topics. In this respect, the forum was the latest episode in a conversation that has been going since the first World Halal Forum in 2006. Issues around Halal integrity are always the most hotly contested and defended, with many differences of opinion.

Business Forum

Building on the Opening Unified Session that looked at the size and scope of the Halal Ecosystem, the Business Forum drilled down into some of the specifics developments, trends, challenges and innovations in the business sector. The business sector has evolved more rapidly than the regulatory framework. Indeed there have been several significant developments that reflect the evolving landscape of the Islamic Economy as an economic force.

Academics Forum

While there have been sessions that dealt with academic topics, this was the first Forum to specifically encourage Academic institutions to expand their offerings in the Islamic Economic sectors. While there are many places to study Islamic Finance, there are very few offerings that cover other dimensions of the Halal ecosystem, and this clearly represents an opportunity for those countries and institutions willing to make the effort to explore this new growth area.

There was a good international representation in the Academic Forum, and there are specific lessons that can be learned from the Islamic finance training sector, as well as the in-house corporate training that is being offered by industry leaders in the Halal sector, such as Nestlé Malaysia.

On-line training as a revenue model brought tried and tested models from the Islamic Finance sector and explored their application across the rest of the Halal ecosystem. There is a clear opportunity for this, particularly for Malaysia, where there are currently more Halal sector training courses than anywhere else.

Scholars Forum

The Scholars Forum created the opportunity to bring scholars into the Summit, and to expose the audience to their knowledge. This added a more spiritual dimension to a topic that has been dominated by a business perspective for many years, and added issues relation to morality, ethics and justice to the overall conversation. There were excellent discourses from visiting scholars, as well as knowledgeable panel discussions. Of particular relevance was the session on the need for specialist scholars for the Halal sector, another area where the Finance sector has lessons that can be applied across a wider spectrum of the Halal ecosystem. Islamic Finance has produced a group of specialist scholars that have kept pace with the evolution of the IF industry, with over many institutions world-wide offering professional training. There is no equivalent in the food, travel or personal care or health sectors, and there is both a need and an opportunity to create a new generation of Islamic scholars who understand the specific needs of these other sectors.
