HistoryThe Oswestry and Newtown Railway (O&NR) was authorised in 1855,{{sfn|Kidner|1992|p=11}} and opened in stages.{{sfn|Kidner|1992|pp=13, 15}} The final section, between {{stnlnk|Welshpool}} and {{stnlnk|Abermule}}, opened on 10 June 1861,{{sfn|Kidner|1992|p=15}} and one of the stations opened that day was Montgomery.{{sfn|Butt|1995|p=162}} The station was {{convert|40+1/4|mi|km}} from Whitchurch,{{sfn|Kidner|1992|p=100}} between {{stnlnk|Forden}} and {{stnlnk|Abermule}}{{sfn|Conolly|1976|loc=p. 14, section B2}} and was situated more than {{convert|1|mi|km}} from the town of Montgomery.{{sfn|Kidner|1992|p=100}} It had two platforms which were slightly staggered, and the station building was on the northern side; there were also a signal box and goods shed.{{sfn|Kidner|1992|p=100}} In June 1864, the O&NR amalgamated with several other companies to form the Cambrian Railways.{{sfn|Kidner|1992|pp=18, 21}} As part of the 1923 Grouping, the Cambrian amalgamated with the Great Western Railway.{{sfn|Railway Clerks' Association|1922|pp=11, 67}} The station was closed by British Railways on 14 June 1965, along with many other wayside stations on the route (as a result of the Beeching Axe}.{{sfn|Butt|1995|p=162}} Much of the infrastructure survived after closure however, including the signal box, eastbound platform, goods shed and main station buildings. The box was decommissioned and removed (along with the passing loop here) in the early 1970s, but the other structures still stand today: the main building is a private house and the goods shed is in commercial use).[1] Notes1. ^Disused Stations - Montgomery Disused Stations Site Record; Retrieved 31 July 2017 References
