He led a coup d'etat that deposed Washington Luís on 24 October 1930 and prevented president-elect Julio Prestes from assuming the presidency of the Republic of Brazil. He was chief of the Provisional Governing Council (Junta Governativa Provisória) which handed the presidency to Getúlio Vargas on 3 November 1930. He was also the cousin of Portuguese President António Óscar Fragoso Carmona. Works
