Somero ({{IPA-fi|ˈsomero}}) is a municipality of Finland, located in the province of Western Finland and part of the Southwest Finland region. The municipality has a population of {{formatnum: {{Infobox Finnish Municipality/population count|Somero}}}} ({{#time: j F Y|{{Infobox Finnish Municipality/population count|sourcedate}} }}) and covers an area of {{convert|{{Infobox Finnish Municipality/total area|Somero}}|km2}} of which {{convert|{{Infobox Finnish Municipality/waters area|Somero}}|km2|abbr=on}} is water. The population density is {{convert|{{Infobox Finnish Municipality/population density|Somero|round=2}}|PD/km2}}. Somero is unilingually Finnish.

Somero's neighbouring municipalities are Jokioinen, Koski Tl, Lohja, Loimaa, Salo, Tammela and Ypäjä.

History

Somero has been known as a trading place since the 14th century. The municipality was officially founded in 1867. The municipality of Somerniemi merged with Somero proper in 1977. Somero was moved from the province of Häme to the province of Turku and Pori in 1990. Currently it belongs to the province of Western Finland. Somero became a town ({{lang|fi|kaupunki}}) on January 1, 1993.

Sports

Somero has many active clubs for different sports. SoPa has teams for volleyball, ice hockey, badminton and tennis. Someron Esa and Somerniemen Veikot are focused on orienteering, swimming, cross-country skiing and track and field. Arska-Basket is a basketball club. Someron Voima is a boxing and football club. Someron Syke organizes fitness classes.

Nature trails in Häntälä Hollows[1], Iso-Valkee Lake[2], Esakallio-Hovimäki, and Metsäkoivula[3] provide opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Somero also has three major national parks right in its neighborhood; Teijo National Park in Salo, Liesjärvi National Park and Torronsuo National Park in Tammela.
