Song Qing is a fictional character in Water Margin, one of the Four Great Classical Novels in Chinese literature. Nicknamed "Iron Fan", he ranks 76th among the 108 Stars of Destiny and 40th of the 72 Earthly Fiends.

Background

Song Qing is Song Jiang's younger brother. While his brother is famous throughout the jianghu for his generosity and chivalry, Song Qing maintains a low profile and leads a simple life by managing their family's properties in Yuncheng County.

Tricking Song Jiang to come home

When Song Jiang goes into hiding at Qingfeng Fort after killing Yan Poxi, Song Qing writes a letter to his brother and asks Shi Yong to help him deliver it. In the letter, Song Qing claims that their father had died, and asks Song Jiang to return home to attend the funeral. Song Jiang immediately rushes home. However, it turns out that his father is alive and well. In fact, Song Qing wrote the letter under the instruction of their father, who misses Song Jiang and wants him to come home out of fear that Song Jiang will tarnish their family's reputation by associating with outlaws.

Song Jiang gets arrested shortly after returning to Yuncheng County, and is put on trial for the murder of Yan Poxi. As Song Jiang used to be the magistrate's clerk, the magistrate decides to show leniency by sparing Song Jiang the death penalty and sentencing him to exile in a prison camp in Jiangzhou (江州; present-day Jiujiang, Jiangxi).

Joining Liangshan

After Song Jiang joins the outlaw band at Liangshan Marsh, he feels worried that his family will get implicated so he insists on making a trip in person back to Yuncheng County to fetch his family to Liangshan. Along the way, he hides in an old temple to evade soldiers sent to arrest him, and falls asleep there. In his dream, he meets a goddess who gives him three divine books. In the meantime, his fellow Liangshan outlaws find him at the temple, drive away the pursuing soldiers, and escort him and his family safely to Liangshan.

Campaigns

Song Qing is placed in charge of organising banquets at Liangshan after the 108 Stars of Destiny come together in what is called the Grand Assembly. He follows the Liangshan heroes on their campaigns against the Liao invaders and rebel forces on Song territory after they received amnesty from Emperor Huizong.

Song Qing is one of the few Liangshan heroes who survive all the campaigns. To honour Song Qing for his service to the Song Empire during the campaigns, Emperor Huizong wants to grant him an official appointment. However, Song Qing declines the honour and chooses to return home and live the rest of his life as a commoner tending to his family's properties.
