The Mukuba University, formerly Copperbelt Secondary Teachers College (COSETCO), was established in 1974 by the Ministry of Education to train Teachers of Science . As COSETCO, the institution used to train teachers of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Home Economics. Academic ReorganizationIn 2008 the institution started offering Bachelor's degrees and four schools were established. 1. School of Education offering various courses, including Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology, Special Education and Communication skills. 2. The School of Home Science and Technology offering majors in Nutritional Sciences, as well as Clothing and Textile Sciences. 3. The School of Mathematics and Computer Studies offering degrees in Mathematics, Computer Science and Geography. 4. Lastly the School of Natural Sciences offering majors in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Agriculture Sciences. All programmes run through Full Time/ Regular mode, as well as via Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode. Vision and Mission StatementThe University's vision is; A centre of Excellence in the provision of quality training in Mathematics, Science, Technology and Education in the region and beyond. The mission statement is; To produce knowledgeable, skilled and socially responsible teachers through teaching, research and innovation. The Mukuba University is currently undergoing unprecedented growth and development. Some of the key developments that have taken place are: - Improved and new programmes on offer - Redesigned learning programmes - Accreditation with the Higher Education Authority - Rehabilitation of old infrastructure - Construction of new infrastructure - Enhanced technological Infrastructure for staff and students - Improved governance systems. Health and SafetyThe University has a University Clinic to serve students and staff accommodated at the Main Campus. The curriculum is the same for both modes of learning. This runs 24 hours, following an agreement with Kitwe District Health Office. The Clinic was reorganized with a view of ensuring access to health care for the University community. Over the years, the clinic has evolved into the University Health Services with an increase in the level and scope of services on offer. Leveraging the use of ICTThe University has established a dedicated Centre for ICT, the Centre for Information Communication Technology, which 'aims to harness information and communication technologies (ICTs) to achieve education needs within and outside Mukuba University' according to the ICT Manager. The Unit has four sections, namely 1. Networking Section, 2. Training Section, 3. Software Development Section and 4. Support and Consultancy Section. The University Library The University library is the principal information provider for all students and staff. University Library The library focuses on meeting the learning, teaching and research needs of the university by developing and sustaining an up to date collection of information and resources.
