Museo Mural Diego Rivera is a museum in Mexico City where Diego Rivera's mural Sueño de una Tarde Dominical en la Alameda Central is located. It is the goal of the museum to diffuse and preserve Diego Rivera's artistic work, as well as organizing temporary exhibits and conferences and events about the work of other artists.

Location

It is located at Balderas Avenue number 202, at the historic center of Mexico City.

Objective

It is the goal of the museum to preserve and diffuse Diego Rivera's artistic work,[1] as well as organizing temporary exhibits and conferences and events, talks, concerts and other art activities.[2]

History

The museum was built in 1986, with the goal of holding Diego Rivera's mural Sueño de una tarde dominical en la Alameda Central (Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in the Alameda Central), considering it was at Hotel del Prado, which was severely damaged by the 1985 Mexico City earthquake.[3]

In order to transport the mural from the hotel, the wall sustaining it was cutted; later, a metal structure was used to support its 15-ton weight, still preserved to date.[1] The museum's building and its facilities were built around the mural, after it was placed at its current location. The museum was inaugurated on February 19, 1988.

Management

The museum is administered by the National Institute of Fine Arts, which in turn is funded by the federal government.[4]

The mural

In 1946, architect Carlos Obregón Santacilia proposed to Diego Rivera the creation of a mural for Del Prado Hotel's Versalles dining room. The subject for the mural was the Alameda Central, considering the closeness of this park. The artist made a fresco of 4.70 x 15.6 m and it was finished in 1947. The mural shows more than 150 characters, some of them are protagonists of the history of Mexico: Hernán Cortés, Benito Juárez, Maximiliano de Habsburgo, Francisco I. Madero, Porfirio Dia In addition, characters of everyday Mexicans from different social classes appear as vendors of cakes, and as revolutionaries. It also shows Frida Kahlo and other spouses of Diego, as well as some of his daughters; finally, the Alameda Central park can be seen at the bottom.

The painter said: "The composition (of the mural) are reminders of my life, my childhood and my youth and covers from 1985 to 1910. The characters of the walk all dream, some sleeping on the benches and others, walking and talking ":[5]
