Plot summaryThe novel is set in Brighton in 1957.[2][3] Tom Burgess, a policeman, is gay.[2][3] Marion, a schoolteacher, falls in love with him nonetheless.[2] So does Patrick, a museum curator.[2] Because of the social constraints of the era, Tom and Marion get married, even though Tom is only in love with Patrick.[2][3] When Marion becomes jealous, she exposes Patrick, who gets arrested for indecency.[4] Critical receptionThe novel received good reviews in the press.
