}}Mystery Skulls is an American indie pop/electronica act by Luis Dubuc that originated in Dallas, Texas but now operates out of Los Angeles, California.[1]

History

The project was formed in 2011 by Luis Dubuc after his previous project, The Secret Handshake, was dissolved.[2] Dubuc initially announced the project on August 8, 2011 via the Mystery Skulls official Tumblr account, where he posted a video of the song Amazing.[3] He later followed this post with a five-song EP on December 30, 2011.[4] Since then, Mystery Skulls has performed in cities across the country, signed with Warner Bros. Records, and has collaborated with noteworthy artists such as Brandy Norwood and Nile Rodgers.[5][6] Dubuc continues to perform shows across the country, including an announced performance at Furry Weekend Atlanta in May 2019.[7]

Mystery Skulls has released eight official music videos so far on his own YouTube channel, whereas four Animated music videos (three of which are deemed official by Dubuc) were released on Ben Mangum's YouTube channel, named “MysteryBen27”. The first three released were for the first album "Forever"; "Ghost" released on February 5, 2014, which is a parody of The Exorcist; "Paralyzed" released on July 30, 2014, which is shown as a Japanese video game featuring mystic monks playing a basketball night-game; and "Magic" released on February 19, 2015, which is CGI animated and presents an alternate telling of how the galaxy came into existence. The next three released were for the second album "One of Us"; "Music" released on July 25, 2017, which is a love story in a futuristic world dystopia; "Erase Me" released on October 12, 2017, which features Luis Dubuc with some surreal imagery; and "Endlessly" released on December 19, 2017, which is animated and features two blue-skinned humanoids battling an inverted alien all-seeing eye with Gundam-like mobile suits. The seventh is a single for the upcoming album "Back to Life"; "Don't F**k With My Money" released on December 13, 2018, which features a scene from the film Drag Me to Hell. The only official videos on Dubuc's channel to have at least a million views on YouTube is "Paralyzed" with a total 1.9 million, "Magic" with 1.4 million views and "Endlessly" with 1.1 million as of March 1, 2019.

On May 6, 2012, the YouTube user Ben Mangum, under the username MysteryBen27, released a fan-made animated music video featuring music by Mystery Skulls entitled "Turntable Turnabout" which featured the Ace Attorney characters Phoenix Wright, Miles Edgeworth, Godot, and the Judge dancing along to the song "Money".[8] As of March 1, 2019, the video has 22 million views on YouTube. On October 26, 2014, Mangum released an animated video for the song "Ghost", which was commissioned by Dubuc himself (as the eighth official video), and features an original plot centered around characters modeled after the Hanna-Barbera cartoon Scooby-Doo.[8] The video became immensely popular and has received 34.7 million hits on YouTube as of March 1, 2019. A follow up to "Ghost", using the song "Freaking Out" was released on April 15, 2016; once again in cooperation with Dubuc. It also received praise and has 19.1 million hits on YouTube as of March 1, 2019. The third video in the series, commonly referred to as the “Mystery Skulls Animated” series, using the song "Hellbent" (with a cameo from the song, "Every Note") was released on October 13, 2018, it also received similar praise and has gained 6 million hits on YouTube as of March 1, 2019.
