It was built in 1924, and is a one-story building consisting of a central block with a recessed covered porch and flanking wings. It is capped with a tin hipped roof. Also on the property is the contributing cafeteria building that was later used as an extra classroom. It was built to house the first public black high school in Nansemond County, Virginia, and included both the primary and secondary grades. The school closed following the 1969–70 school year.[3] It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.[2] References1. ^{{cite web|title=Virginia Landmarks Register|url=http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/register_counties_cities.htm|publisher=Virginia Department of Historic Resources|accessdate=19 March 2013}} {{National Register of Historic Places in Virginia}}{{SuffolkVA-NRHP-stub}}2. ^1 {{NRISref|version=2010a}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/Cities/Suffolk/133-5065_Nansemond_County_Training_School_2004_Final_Nomination.pdf|title=National Register of Historic Places Inventory/Nomination: Nansemond County Training School |author=Mary C.
