The fund for the institute was allocated in February 2014. [2] [3] The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Suresh Prabhu inaugurated the institute at Rajabari on 22 February 2019 via video telecast. The institute will offer four year courses in Textile and Apparel design, Communication design and Industrial designs from the academic year 2019-20.[4] CampusThe Institute's own campus with adequate infrastructure will be ready by March 2019. The campus is located at Tocklai village. It is on the bank of local river namely Tocklai river. It is 8 km away from Jorhat Airport and 2.5 km from Jorhat Railway Station. Courses offeredThe institute offers three main courses,Textile and Apparel design, Communication design and Industrial designs all of which follow the two semester per year pattern. Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD)This 4-year course is offered in three specialization by NID Jorhat.
