Beginning with December 1947, the party is generally referred to as the National Liberal Party–Bejan (PNL-Bejan), as leader Gheorghe Tătărescu resigned from the party and was replaced by Petre Bejan. HistoryThe party resulted from a split in the National Liberal Party (PNL), with the faction around Gheorghe Tătărescu, the party's general secretary, establishing a distinct party organisation in late 1944 (the other faction of the party, which supported party president Dinu Brătianu, was consequently known as PNL-Brătianu). In April 1946 the party opted to join the pro-government Bloc of Democratic Parties.[1] In the November 1946 elections the Bloc won 347 of the 414 seats, with the PNL-T taking 75.[2] In the 1948 elections it ran, as PNL-Bejan, in opposition to the government coalition, only receiving 7 seats.
