The highway connects the northern and southern regions of Poland, running from Gdańsk to Cieszyn at the Czech border, traversing the Pomeranian, Kuyavian-Pomeranian, Łódź and Silesian voivodeships. National road 1 is a component of European highway E75. From Piotrków Trybunalski to Katowice, it is part of the Gierkówka route, and it has four bridges over the Vistula river. Currently{{When|date = September 2015}}, construction efforts for the A1 motorway run parallel to or along older sections of the highway.
