Nattali Rize (born Natalie Magdalena Chilcote) is an Australian-born, Jamaican-based musician, record producer and social activist. In 2003, as Natalie Pa'apa'a, on lead vocals and lead guitar, she was joined by her domestic partner, Carlo Santone, on bass guitar and percussion, to form, Blue King Brown, an urban roots ensemble, in Byron Bay.

She relocated to Jamaica in mid-2014, adopted her new performance name and in March 2015 collaborated with local group, Notis, to issue a single, "Rebel Love". It was followed by a nine-track extended play, New Era Frequency (7 August 2015). Rize's first solo album, Rebel Frequency, was released in March 2017.

Biography

Natalie Magdalena Chilcote,[1] was born in Byron Bay, New South Wales. She described her ethnic background, "Samoan, Basque, Native American and Mexican."[2] Rize cites her mother as an inspiration, "We listened to all that great early soul, Aretha Franklin, Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff – and further back Louis Armstrong – everything was thrown in there.”[2] As for her father, "I don’t talk about him.”[2] From 2000 she worked as a street percussionist, before forming a percussion duo, with her domestic partner, Carlo Santone, Skin,[5][6] featuring Greg Sheehan. The duo formed Blue King Brown in 2003, with Rize working as Natalie Pa'apa'a on lead vocals and lead guitar, in the urban roots ensemble, which had up to eight members, at a time.[5][6][9]

Rize and Santone, as Blue King Brown, moved to Melbourne in 2004. That group's first single, "Water", received high rotation on Triple J and an AIR Chart award in 2006.[5] It was co-written by the pair and was later covered by Black Arm Band.[11] Known for their strong political songs and high octane live performances,[5] the group opened for Carlos Santana, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Damian Marley, the John Butler Trio, the Cat Empire, Silverchair and Powderfinger.[5] They toured Canada, the United States, France, England and Japan.

Blue King Brown's third album, Born Free (November 2014), was partially recorded in Kingston, Jamaica, with the producers Sly and Robbie. By that time the singer had changed her performance name to Nattalie Rize and relocated to that city. Matt Collar of AllMusic, explained, "[the name is] purportedly inspired by both the Native American word 'natta' meaning 'speaker' and the Bob Marley song 'Rise Up'."[2][16] She issued a single, "Rebel Love", in collaboration with local group, Notis;[17] it was co-written by Rise,[18] Wayne Thompson, Patterson, Sellton and Wels. They toured the US in support of Michael Franti.[17] The collaborators followed with a nine-track EP, New Era Frequency (7 August 2015).[20] Her first album, Rebel Frequency, was released in March 2017.[22]
