It sits on the A624 trunk road from Glossop to Chapel-en-le-Frith featuring a TOTSO where left carries one down to Chapel and right heads to Chinley. There is a railway bridge over the turning, used for both freight and passengers, on the Hope Valley Line to Sheffield and Manchester; very close down the line is Chinley railway station. Next to this the Crown & Mitre pub; now converted into residential flats; is the main landmark and there are a couple of residential housing streets and terraces, and one or two businesses. The hamlet has an industrial past, along with the neighbouring village of Hayfield.[1] New Smithy's Maynestone Mill was finally demolished in 1946, almost 500 years after it was opened in 1452.[1][2] New Smithy is in a hilly area (being in the Peak District); geographical features include Bole Hill, Mount Famine, South Head, Eccles Pike, Mag Low, Chinley Churn, the River Sett and Combs Reservoir.[3] References1. ^1 {{cite web|last=Morris|first=Liz|title=Chinley, Buxworth & Brownside Community Association - History|url=http://www.chinleyca.org.uk/local-info/history/|publisher=Chinley, Buxworth & Brownside Community Association|accessdate=12 January 2016|author2=Harvey Rudkin }} {{derbyshire-geo-stub}}2. ^{{cite journal|last=Andrew|first=Angela|url=http://geesofderbyshire.wordpress.com/2012/08/16/ralph-gee-of-lydgate-indenture-dated-2nd-october-1624/|date = 16 August 2012|accessdate=12 January 2016|title=Ralph GEE of Lydgate - Indenture dated 2nd October 1624 |publisher=geesofderbyshire}} 3. ^{{cite web|author=Good Stuff IT Services |url=http://www.explorebritain.info/locality-derbyshire-new-smithy-sk0582 |title=New Smithy, Derbyshire | Explore Britain |publisher=Explorebritain.info |accessdate=12 January 2016}} 3 : Hamlets in Derbyshire|Towns and villages of the Peak District|High Peak |
