The progenitor was detected as a cool hypergiant with an absolute visual magnitude of −9 and 400,000 times more luminous than the sun. The eruption saw it increase in luminosity to around {{solar luminosity|80,000,000}}.[3] SupernovaNGC 5806 has also hosted a true supernova, SN 2004dg, around 100 times brighter than SN Hunt 248. This was a typical type II supernova. The progenitor has not been detected and is expected to have been a relatively low mass, low luminosity, red supergiant.[4] {{clear}}References1. ^1 {{cite web | url=http://www.skyfactory.org/deepskycatalogue/NGC5806.html | title=Galaxy NGC 5806 | accessdate=December 8, 2011}} 2. ^1 2 3 4 5 {{cite web | url=http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=NGC+5806 | title=NGC 5806 | accessdate=December 8, 2011}} 3. ^{{cite journal|bibcode=2015MNRAS.447.1922M|arxiv=1407.4681|title=SN Hunt 248: A super-Eddington outburst from a massive cool hypergiant|journal=Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society|volume=447|issue=2|pages=1922|author1=Mauerhan|first1=Jon C.|last2=Van Dyk|first2=Schuyler D.|last3=Graham|first3=Melissa L.|last4=Zheng|first4=Weikang|last5=Clubb|first5=Kelsey I.|last6=Filippenko|first6=Alexei V.|last7=Valenti|first7=Stefano|last8=Brown|first8=Peter|last9=Smith|first9=Nathan|last10=Howell|first10=D.
