He twice won titles at the Deja Blue competition and finished third at the Caribbean Cup in Roatán, Honduras. He achieved an American record in the Caribbean Cup on May 27, 2013, with a dive to 100 meters in the Constant Weight (CWT) category.[12] He finished third in the Constant Weight Without Fins (CNF) category at the free-diving world championships in Greece in September 2013.[2] On 15 November 2013, Mevoli attempted to reach a depth of {{Convert|96|m}} in the Free Immersion (FIM) category at Vertical Blue, but had to turn back at {{Convert|80|m}} after suffering an upper respiratory squeeze.[2] On 17 November Mevoli attempted a CNF dive to {{Convert|72|m}} on a single breath.[2][3] He began to turn back at {{Convert|68|m}}, but appeared to change his mind and dived downward again. Mevoli returned to the surface after 3 minutes and 38 seconds underwater, but fell backwards into the ocean and lost consciousness. Safety divers and the event physician attempted to revive Mevoli, whose pulse disappeared. After resuscitation efforts had continued for 90 minutes, he was transported to Vid Simms Memorial Health Center, reportedly suffering from pulmonary edema.[1][2] Mevoli died at 1:44 p.m. He was the first athlete to die in an international free-diving competition.[2] The New York Times published a photograph of Mevoli taken just after his return to the surface from his last dive and shortly before he lost consciousness.[8] Some readers questioned the ethics of publishing the photograph.[7]References1. ^1 2 {{cite news|url=http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/sptimes/obituary.aspx?n=nicholas-lawrence-mevoli&pid=168150289&fhid=5643|title=Nicholas Lawrence MEVOLI III Obituary|date=November 24, 2013|journal=Tampa Bay Times|accessdate=November 27, 2013}} 2. ^1 2 3 4 5 6 {{cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/18/sports/deep-water-diver-from-brooklyn-dies-after-trying-for-a-record.html?pagewanted=1&_r=0&ref=international-home|title=A Deep-Water Diver From Brooklyn Dies After Trying for a Record|journal=The New York Times|first=Adam|last=Skolnick|date=November 17, 2013|accessdate=November 30, 2013}} 3. ^1 {{cite news|url=http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/18/us/free-diver-death/|title=Nicholas Mevoli dies trying to set freediving record|last1=Levs|first1=Josh|authorlink1=Josh Levs|last2=Ahmed|first2=Saeed|date=November 18, 2013|publisher=Cable News Network|accessdate=November 18, 2013}} 4. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/18/nicholas-mevoli-dead-freediving_n_4294034.html|last=Pearson|first=Jake|title=Nicholas Mevoli, Record-Setting U.S. Diver, Dies At Freediving Contest In Bahamas|date=November 17, 2013|publisher=Associated Press|accessdate=November 18, 2013}} 5. ^{{cite news|url=https://nypost.com/2013/11/18/brooklyn-man-dies-in-bahamas-diving-contest/|last1=McNulty|first1=Matt|last2=Soltis|first2=Andy|authorlink2=Andrew Soltis|title=Brooklyn diver had film dreams|date=November 18, 2013|journal=New York Post|accessdate=November 20, 2013}} 6. ^{{cite news|url=https://blogs.wsj.com/metropolis/2013/11/18/nicholas-mivoli-a-free-diver-from-brooklyn-dies-during-competition/|title=Nicholas Mevoli, a Free-Diver from Brooklyn, Dies During Competition|last=Namako|first=Tom|date=November 18, 2013|journal=The Wall Street Journal|accessdate=November 21, 2013}} 7. ^1 2 {{cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/21/sports/readers-react-to-a-divers-rise-and-swift-death.html?src=recg|title=Readers React to Death of a Diver, and an Image of Him|last=Moore|first=Lela|date=November 20, 2013|journal=The New York Times|accessdate=November 23, 2013}} 8. ^1 2 {{cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/19/sports/testing-limits-of-a-niche-sport-diver-met-fate-72-meters-down.html?hpw&rref=&_r=0|title=A Diver's Rise, and Swift Death, at the Limits of a Growing Sport|last1=Branch|first1=John|last2=Skolnick|first2=Adam|last3=Broad|first3=William J.|authorlink3=William Broad|last4=Pilon|first4=Mary|authorlink4=Mary Pilon|date=November 18, 2013|journal=The New York Times|accessdate=November 23, 2013}} 9. ^{{cite journal|title=In Focus|last=Glucksman|first=Mary|journal=Filmmaker Magazine|url=http://www.filmmakermagazine.com/archives/issues/summer2002/columns/in_focus.php|date=Summer 2002|accessdate=November 23, 2013}} 10. ^{{IMDb name|1499940|Nic Mevoli}}{{unreliable source?|date=February 2013}} 11. ^{{cite web|last=Lee|first=Nathan|journal=The New York Times|title=Two Young Radicals and Their Dovetailing Destinies|date=December 1, 2005|accessdate=December 7, 2013|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/01/movies/01exis.html}} 12. ^{{cite web|title=The First American to 100 Meters: Nicholas Mevoli|date=May 27, 2013|first=Francesca|last=Koe|publisher=Deeper Blue|url=http://www.deeperblue.com/the-first-american-to-100-meters-nicholas-mevoli/|accessdate=November 20, 2013}} External links
