The conservation park was proclaimed in 2003 under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 to ‘protect a significant breeding location for the Australian sea lion.’[3] Nicolas Baudin Island's significance is argued as follows:[3] Recent research has confirmed that the park is of great importance as a breeding colony for a large population of Australian sea lions and is considered important in the association of sea-lions and New Zealand fur seals living side by side. South of the park, Point Labatt is the site of the largest mainland breeding colony of Australian sea lions, thought to interact heavily with the Nicolas Baudin Island colony. Its extent includes the island with an area of about {{convert|10|ha|acres}} and adjoining seabed with a total area of {{convert|94|ha|acres}}.[4][2][5] Part of the conservation park were declared as a prohibited area at the day of establishment to prevent any disturbance of the breeding cycle of the Australian sea lion and New Zealand fur seal population.[3] The conservation park including its marine zone is classified as an IUCN Category Ia protected area.[1][6] References1. ^1 2 {{cite web|title= Terrestrial Protected Areas of South Australia (refer 'DETAIL' tab ) |url= http://www.environment.gov.au/system/files/pages/761994ab-42cc-4f24-952c-c21221861884/files/capad2016sa.xlsx |work=CAPAD 2016|publisher=Australian Government, Department of the Environment (DoE) |accessdate=21 February 2018 |date=2016}} 2. ^1 2 {{cite web|title=Protected Areas Information System - reserve list (as of 17 Feb 2014)|url=http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/files/b88e6e26-4bd9-4c68-8fff-9e800114eb69/park-management-protected-areas-gen.pdf|publisher=Department of Environment Water and Natural Resources|accessdate=26 March 2014|pages=}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite book |title=Island Parks of Western Eyre Peninsula Management Plan |author=Anon |year=2006 |series= |publisher=Department for Environment and Heritage, South Australia |location=Adelaide |isbn=1-921238-18-6 |page = 4|url=http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/files/570dd7a4-2986-4563-ae90-9e4f00b22af4/WESTEYRE_IP.pdf }} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Search results for ‘Nicolas Baudin Island Conservation Park' with the following datasets being selected - 'Suburbs and Localities', 'Coastline MHW', ‘NPW and Conservation Reserve Boundaries’ and 'Gazetteer' |url=http://location.sa.gov.au/viewer/|website=Location SA Map Viewer|publisher=Government of South Australia|accessdate=9 January 2018}} 5. ^{{cite journal|last1=Shaughnessy|first1=Peter|last2=Dennis|first2=Terry|title=Nicolas Baudin Island, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia|journal=Corella|date=2007|volume=31|issue=3/4|pages=85–86|url=https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Peter_Shaughnessy/publication/262181805_Seabird_islands_No._251_Nicolas_Baudin_Island_Eyre_Peninsula_South_Australia/links/0f317536dbc120afe5000000.pdf.|accessdate=1 January 2015|issn=}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=Marine Protected Areas in coastal waters of South Australia|url=http://www.environment.gov.au/system/files/pages/761994ab-42cc-4f24-952c-c21221861884/files/sa-capad-2016m.xlsx|website=CAPAD 2016|publisher=Australian government|accessdate=9 January 2018|date=2016}} External links
