Situated at the center of the Kashmir valley, Srinagar is the second most populous district in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, after Jammu District and is home to the summer capital (Srinagar) of Jammu and Kashmir (The capital moves to Jammu city in the winter).[1] The largest city is Srinagar.

As of 2011 it is the second most populous district of Jammu and Kashmir (out of 22), after Jammu.[2]

Administration

Srinagar district has 2 Tehsils:

  • Srinagar South Tehsil.
  • Srinagar North Tehsil.

This district consists of a single block: Srinagar.[3] This block consists of a number of panchayats.

Politics

Srinagar District has 8 assembly constituencies: Hazratbal, Zadibal, Eidgah, Khanyar, Habbakadal, Amirakadal, Sonwar and Batmaloo.[4]

Demographics

According to the 2011 census Srinagar district has a population of 1,269,751,[2] roughly equal to the nation of Estonia[5] or the US state of New Hampshire.[6] This gives it a ranking of 381st in India (out of a total of 640).[2] The district has a population density of {{convert| 703 |PD/sqkm|PD/sqmi}} .[2] Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 23.56%.[2] Srinagar has a sex ratio of 879 females for every 1000 males,[2] and a literacy rate of 71.21%.[2]
