The pool opened 4 April 1936 and hosted the swimming and diving events for the 1938 Empire Games.[3] Heating was added in 2000 and a {{convert|25|m}} indoor pool was added in 2001.[4] Despite the name, it was not the aquatic venue for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games; the aquatic events took place at the Sydney International Aquatic Centre in Sydney Olympic Park. In all, 86 world records have been set at the pool by such swimming greats as, for example, Jon Konrads and Ilsa Konrads, Lorraine Crapp, Frank O'Neill, Judy Joy Davies, John Devitt, Shane Gould and Michelle Ford.[5] The venue is operated by the local North Sydney Council, providing public access to the two pools, a gym, and a sauna and spa.
